Hello all! I am looking at a 1995 Bayliner Capri 1850LS with Mercruiser 3.0LX and an Alpha1 outdrive. Also has a galvanized Escort trailer.

The boat was taken in as a trade and the dealer has it listed for $6000. I have a bunch of pictures to attach and I appreciate any input. When I arrived and we pulled the cover off, everything was wet. I mean SOAKED. Someone had forgotten to put the cover back on and it got rained in for about 3 days straight. Now that's getting off on the right foot. I pulled the engine housing off to look at the engine. I didn't see any obvious oil stains or leaks anywhere. It doesn't look like any major engine work had been done and nothing had fresh paint. I did find mold on one of the hoses in the engine compartment. I have attached a picture of this. I knocked around to feel for anything soft and didn't find anything. There was water pooled up in the area where the trim pump and reservoir are located because of the rain. About 2 inches at the stern. The floor is solid throughout the whole boat. There are some black mold spots scattered on some of the vinyl in the boat, but it isn't anything that cant be cleaned.

My main concerns are the outdrive and the hull. The salesman told me that the gimbal bearing has to be replaced before it can be sold. I asked why the bearing was bad and he didn't seem to have an answer. I asked if the bellows was to be replaced too. Again, not sure. He told me that they were going to do it this week and I am going to try to be down there when the outdrive is pulled to get a look for myself. Is this a big cause for concern? It also looks like the skeg has been hit a few times and might have been cut/trimmed. I have attached a picture of this. I am not sure if the shape of it is correct. It does have a fresh coat of paint on the prop and skeg. I wish I could have seen it before.

The hull has some wear along the keel from multiple beachings. There are some small areas of the fiberglass that have chipped off and someone spread some kind of putty. It looks bad and I would like to know if this will affect the integrity of the hull and what the cost of repair might be.

The trailer was in good shape, but the tires had some cracking from sitting for long periods.

There is some minor interior work to be done. The panel below the helm has come loose and someone screwed an L bracket into it. It is still loose, but should be an easy fix. One of the plastic latches on the throttle handle cover has broken and the case separates when you reach full throttle. Again, seems like a simple fix.

Here is a link to the pictures I took. I used someones photobucket to upload more pictures.

Any input helps. Thanks for looking

You can find a lot nicer boat than this one for $6000. I would not give more than $2500.
The 3.0merc & alph are good units but the boat hardware & interior materials are turning to crap.
If the gimbal needs replace it most likely was never serviced-until it quit. It does not seam to maintained well at all.

Re: Used boat opinions

The hull scrape and bad repair are the biggest concerns. You could fix it yourself, but it would be a bit of work. A pro might want $1k or so.

The mold is typical, most boaters use lots of bleach to get rid of mold, etc.

The skeg looks fine.

Lots of wood used on that boat and the rot issue will be a concern.

Gimbal bearings wear out, so it may just be ready for a new one.

Check nada for fair market pricing, plus the trailer, if needed.

$6k seems high considering the hull damage.

Re: Used boat opinions

Hey mate, I had the 1995 bayliner capri 1700LS (outboard)

First of all, when I bought mine everything felt solid, I mean everything. When I gutted it, the transom, stringers, floor and seat bases either all had wet or dry rot
so be very very carefull. bayliners of this vintage are rot boxes, no matter how well they have been looked after the construction was flawed, they didn't seal the wood very well and they used cheap ply. (my original ply wasnt' even marine ply)
* quicksilver 3000 throttle, the top and bottom cover click into each other and cost about $15. can still buy new from mercury.
* the boat has had ALOT of rough beachings in its life. the keel is going to take allot of work to get right. allot of sanding, possible fiberglass repairs and re gelcoated.
*the skeg has been knocked a few times, not uncommon with people when they beach or go through shallower waters. it doesn't appear too bad. I have seen allot worse.
* just a heads up the plastic runners that the fold out seats are on, they do break really easy if they are orignal ones. the plastic just gets brittle. not a big deal just a PITA
* after looking through the photos it does look like overall its been looked after to a point. I have seen much worse in bayliners of that age. the motor looks clean and the trim looks like its been covered most of its life if its original.

I can almost promise you it will have rot in it. its inevitible of a bayliner of that age. Don't get me wrong I LOVED my little capri, I LOVED it. it was an awesome boat when I fixed everything, the hull was great and it handled great. :D

The one thing I couldn't see was if the walk through windscreen lines up well or not, that's normally a great indication of whether the rot is bad or not.

there has been a few of these posts lately about what boat to buy, and your in good hands, But i would suggest about letting people know where abouts your located as if this one is a bust they can and will help find a good one.

If there isn't any rot it in it You will definitely love it. Best of luck mate and Im sure that plenty more good advice will follow and if I am off the ball with anything someone will correct me.

Re: Used boat opinions

Thanks for all the fast responses!

Any rot is my primary concern. I have read the many horror stories and don't want to write one of my own.

The hull is also a pretty big concern. Thanks for the info on repair costs. I grew up on the water and we beached many, many times and our keel never looked like this.

The center window works perfectly, no tight spots or weird gaps. One thing I saw around the windshield was a small area of trim that was popped up in front of the helm.

All of the trim is original. I did notice that the foam around the bottom of the windshield had some cracking. I figure that is standard wear and tear.

I am going to be looking at some other similar boats in the next week. I am in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington state if that helps any. an 18-19 foot bowrider with the 3.0 is preferred. $5-6 thousand is my rough budget.

If i were to make an offer on this one, I'd be at about $2800. I kind of chuckled at $6000.

Thanks again for the responses. This seems to be a really helpful community!

Happy sailing!

Re: Used boat opinions

hey mate, I have found a few that may be worth considering.
Has had work done, professional with receipts?
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/boa/2842215204.html
good motor and size hull combination
http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/boa/2851698585.html
needs trim work but could be worthwhile
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/boa/2843318559.html
A bit expensive but cash does wonders as its always a buyers market, plus looks pretty good and clean
http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/boa/2855682554.html
may be a bit underpowered for 20 foot but worth a look or phone call?
http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/boa/2859617081.html

hope this helps mate, the 1998 searay would be my pick if you could get the price down.

Re: Used boat opinions

i had a look at that one, it seems a little expensive compared to the others that I looked at in your area. but it is the V6, which will be a heap better than the 3L. A good wetsand should help to bring it up and make it shine too.

Re: Used boat opinions

Is the step up from a 3.0 to a 4.3 a large change in fuel consumption? I had originally wanted a 3.0 because we aren't going to be doing any towing/skiing and for the most part it would be 2 or 3 people on board. We will just be at a low cruise speed for the most part, but I like the idea of having some extra power if needed.

Re: Used boat opinions

If you are gentle with the boat you shouldn't notice too much difference in fuel. for example: v8 uses 5% of power to move boat at 10mph, v6 uses 7% of power to move boat at 10mph, 4cy uses 9% of power to move boat at 10mph. so each engine will use its respective amount of fuel (jsut as an example i have no idea of the exact %);). long storey short no, not really as the v6 doesn't have to work as hard to do the same as the 4cyl. its never a bad idea to have a bit more power, as others have said elsewhere on here, you can always reach for more if you have it but you cant if you dont. In saying that if you give it stick all day every day yep you probably will notice a difference.

Its a personal opinion really, but i have noticed that since i upgraded from a 120hp (outboard) to the 260hp inboard v8 even tho my new boat is 4 foot longer and a LOT heavier, everything is just so much easier now.

On a 3.0 I/O alot of people have found that by adding smart tabs it makes a huge difference to how the boat gets on the plane.
In regards to the MAXUM I cant say for sure if they were built to the same standards as bayliner being that the same company owned them. I'd be careful but it sounds like you can get a deal if its been looked after.
Again mate its all personal choice, I know that bayliners and such of that age are prone to rot, but in hind site I still would have bought it as I learnt heaps from fixing it and it was a fun safe boat to use when I was done.

You know I'd probably give this a go, yeah different drive so im sure you cant do a straight comparison to a merc, although I am yet to hear anything bad about late model volvo setups.
I run a 5.7 260HP v8 in a 21ft wellcraft, It takes about 100 Litres of fuel to fill up, I run 98octance and the tank lasts nearly 3 weekends.(more if i dont go out during the week) I use it most of the day with only an hour or two stop for lunch, plus after every 2 hours we come in for a swim etc etc. we tube wakeboard and ski. I dont think honestly that you would find the v8 that thirsty for what you want to do. Plus its always nice to have the power their if you want or need it. on the upside that one above could be a great deal if you can hear it running and do a good check over.

Be careful of that 19' Celebrity - that 5.0 liter is a Ford (distributor at the front of the motor). I'm sure most parts are still available, but Ford stopped 'marinizing' motors over a decade ago.

Re: Used boat opinions

I have a 19ft Maxum of the same year as that one listed. Mine does have a "water proof stringer system" and "fiberglass lined deck". Though with a 3.0 on a 20ft boat, I do have the feeling it will be on the underpowered side. It does look like this guy take care of his boat, from the way he stores it. More stuff on Maxum vs. Bayliner: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=473062&highlight=bayliner

I personally would look at a more powerful engine, though that is coming from someone who is into water sports and taking friends out.

Well, he was kinda mixin' and matchin' the numbers, but the Ford 302 c.i. was usually referred to as a 5.0, same as the GM 305 c.i.

Always gotta be aware that it could be either one when looking at boats made prior to (about) the year 2000. Luckily, the position of the distributor is an easy thing to spot even when all the other markings are missing.

Re: Used boat opinions

I will watch out for Ford powerplants. When I saw the 5.0 I assumed it was a 305ci too. I liked the idea of that because I had a Camaro with a 305 and that engine treated me very nicely.

This is right down the road from my work so I am going to look at it too. Looks clean but the price seems steep. Any thoughts?

Re: Used boat opinions

That's a bigger boat than the first one, with a better motor (but not a V8, which is desirable in this size boat). There may even be a small enclosed area for a porta-potty under the port side console. It's also listed as "OBO", so there is clearly wiggle room in the price.

Re: Used boat opinions

Well, I saw the 1994 2050 today. It was solid. There were no soft spots anywhere. There were some small tears in the vinyl in some places, but nothing that I wouldn't expect from a 1994 boat. I really liked the size of the 20'.

The only issue I could see was some oily residue in the bilge area below the engine. It wasn't visible, but when I slid a finger across the bilge it was slick. It didn't look like someone had cleaned it out to hide anything and I saw no evidence of oil leaks anywhere on the motor or outdrive.

My new question is how does a sea trial work when a boat is winterized? Here in the Seattle area we flirt with freezing temperatures occasionally for about another month. I understand that the potential buyer pays for fuel for the boat, tow vehicle, and launching fees. I figure the de-winterization would be something I pay for too. Will that add a lot of extra expense to the final price, or is it a fairly simple task? If for some reason the boat was unfit would I pay for re-winterization?

Thanks!

Hey mate thats great news. Yeah When I upgraded to my 21ft I noticed a huge difference in the actual size of the boat, it feels a heap more stable on the water. In regards to the oil in the bilge yep it could be he was hiding something or it could be as simple as when draining the oil to do a service on the motor some oil went into the bilge. I myself can say that everytime I change the oil I get some if not most of the oil in the bilge. lols Im considering just draining it into the bilge and out the bung for future to save myself from cursing for twenty min.
I can't help you out too much in the whole de winterization side of a sea trial, as we don't freeze up down here, but in regards to the whole sea trial side, the last couple of boats I looked at I just swung the owner $50 for fuel and off we went. I guess what ever your both comfortable and happy with would be fair. just make sure you both have a clear understanding of what is to happen if you do or don't buy the boat.

best of luck mate
