I'm starting to look for a used 9.9. No hurry mind you, just kind-of looking. It seems like most used motors are from the 70's. I'd like to find something no more than 10 years old.
Nada prices are about 600. for a 1997 9.9 Merc.
Is this realistic? Is fall and winter a good "off season" buyers market time of year ?

NADA values are always low. Round here, a 1970s 9.9 merc would go for that 600. I would be surprised if you found a 1997 9.9 motor for 600. Now, I have to ask why you are looking at a merc? I would definitely go for an older Johnnyrude, than a merc.

Re: Used 9.9

I admit I'm new to the outboard motor game. I just want the best bang for my buck. I picked up an older Starcraft boat, a good MinnKota electric for the lakes. Now I want to fish the river. (Delaware).
What should I be looking for?

I have no clue what you are looking for. If you plan on fishing it from a 21 foot ranger bass boat, I would look for a 250, not a 9.9. If from a little bass hunter 8 footer, I would keep the MK. How big a boat you talking? Now, I don't think I ever have been near the Delaware (if you have to cross it, to go from Atlanta to Washington DC by bus, then I have - but I don't remember) but I think it is a fairly big river, so I would definitely want something reliable. Where I come from, reliable has Johnson or Evinrude on the side of the cowl. I would also want something close to the max of the boat. Which model Starcraft is it, and what is the hp rating.

It's a 14' starcraft seafarer. HP must be a max of 9.9 to be legal in some reservoirs and lakes around here. I like your loyalty to Johnson and Evinrudes. Especially the old ones.

Re: Used 9.9

I like my loyalty to Johnnyrude too. Especially at the ramp on a cold morning, and my Evinrude, which has been sitting for a month, starts on the fifth pull, and the merc on the jon next to me, takes like 20, then is all sputtery. And, he was out last week.:D

You just need to keep on the lookout. You need to get an idea of what they are selling for in your area (check ebay and craigslist, not NADA) and when you see one below that price, you need to pounce fast. The deals are on Craigslist, as it favors buyers, and ebay favors sellers. Just have to be quick. We have bought things within 5 minutes of being listed. I check it about 8 times a day.
When you go to pick it up, make him run it in a barrel, unless you want to spend time fixing it (some of us, me included, fix them for the fun of it, so we never ask to run it)
Also, check the LU lube, and make sure it don't have metal shavings, and make sure it doesn't look milky. Also, if it is an OMC (johnnyrude) from the 80s, make sure it was run on 50:1, and not 100:1. They put that in their manuals, and then changed it, but some folks have run it 100:1 it's whole life. Also make sure nothing looks out of place, or repaired sloppily.
If you find something you are unsure of, run it by us, and we will tell you how much it could be worth, and if it looks sound.

Good luck!!

9.9 used OMC is not hard to find and that is exactly what I would look for in your situation and fall is a great time to buy.

I would look to pay $250 to $600 depending on year and condition

The older greenheads and redheads are still running and those would be cheaper. The 80's and 90's is probably more your liking, but those tend to get more money. I would guess $400-$500 on average for those unless it is in exceptional shape.

Re: Used 9.9

Round here, the 80s and 90s ones are more like 550 to 650. We would pounce on a 350 - 400 in a heartbeat. The green and redheads still get up into the 350s + from time to time, if they are even for sale. So dang hard to find someone willing to part with theirs.

But then again, I am guessing the reason they are cheaper is cause yall have more up in MN. Why is that? I go to a northern Craigslist, and you have tons of nice outboards, without boats. Here, a boatless motor is hard to come by, and a boat with a nice motor is almost as hard. (less you know the right places:D - but I don't give those sources away)

We have more boats than cars up here.

Re: Used 9.9

In 1999 I sold an early 90's Suzuki 9.9 with oil injection for $300. I bought it new. It had only been run 3 or 4 times and than only as a kicker to clear some shallow water. I kick myself every time I think of it.
