I am looking at a used pontoon with this engine.. what is the general consensus reguarding this powerplant...Good engine or should I be leary? Anything special with this motor that I should check out when we do the inspection?

Also, I have heard that you should check the lower unit oil for water, is there an easy way to do this at the dock. Any other advice would be helpful.

Are you sure you shouldn't be in the outboard forum? A 'toon with an inboard/IO is a rareity indeed....

Re: Used 5.7 Mercrusier Thunderbolt 250...

When we go to eat at my FAV BBQ joint, were looking at a major retail outdoor sports stores boat inventory, I about died when I saw several brand new "Toons" with an Alpha drive sticking out of the transom! Ya, its a great combo. I'm guessing its a Merc 250 (5.7l EFI) and Alpha 1 dive. Rarely do you get water in the drive if properly maintained. as always get it inspected, you really cant tell much in a driveway on muffs. Maybe a lake test? I have purchased 2 boats with only my inspection and got lucky. There is a plug on the bottom of the drive Starboard side that takes a common (flat blade) screw driver, IF the owner will let you, back it out a little and make sure no water comes out. Milky fluid or water would be bad. Check the risers and manifolds for any signs of rust where they join together. Oil leaks at the intake manifold to block areas (Front and back). At LEAST run it on muffs and make sure it hits operating temp and not over. I'm sure ive missed a few things.
