For those of you, like me who's computers are online 24/7, how about using your "downtime" for something constructive, smallpox research.
There is a site www.grid.org that uses your computer's spare CPU cycles to perform computational chemistry that analyzes possible molecular formulas to fight the smallpox virus. Basically what it does is spread the calculations across thousands of computers to get increased performance. The formulas that are determined to have possibilities are turned over to the Dept of Defense for further study.

You have to download a small program that does the calcs. (On grid.orgs main page, click the link for the Smallpox Project) You can run it as a screen saver or turn it on to run all the time. Sorry but you dont get a prize or anything like that but it is kind of interesting.

I figured with the way things are going in the big sandbox, if the nut case starts using biologicals, anything I can do to help the troops is worth while.

Nav
