Hi I didn't want to side track phatmanmike's post but wanted to know a little more about USAA.

Matt you said
i pay very little through usaa, but membership is limited to military officers.
Well my wife is a 03 in the Navy Reserves so I thought I'd look into it.
The first prompt I got asked:

Who's Eligible
Active duty, National Guard and Reserve enlisted personnel, officers and officer candidates, and their dependents are eligible for membership in USAA. Do you want to find out if you are eligible?

So I clicked on next! To find out if we were eligible.

The next prompt:

Are you or have you been in the U.S. armed forces or are you currently enrolled in a commissioning program?

Well it asked have you been is the US armed forces so I clicked yes (71-85 Army SFC)

At this point I'm thinking why worry about wifes info if I can use my own.

Next question was
If yes, are you or have you been:
enlisted
officer
in a commissioning program
So I clicked Enlisted and followed the prompt until it got into the exact details which I don't have here like exactly when was I drafted, went to basic and exact date I left. I have that info DD Form 214 in storage.

SO I closed the window and decieded to ask you guys three questions.

1: Has USAA changed it's membership program since you joined?

2: Would it be better to just use my wifes information? Any rate differences?

3: Does USAA offer Replacement cost insurance? I have a custom made boat that at todays prices would cost me 22,000 to replace, and the factory will indorce me that it's in perfect condition.

Thanks guys

Link

I've been a member of USAA since '67 and have been very pleased with their cost, coverage and very quick, fair claims settlememt. I have not, however, ever filed a boat claim. Both my kids are USAA members - kind of a 'legacy' thing.

1. Don't remember what year, but I think about 10 - 12 years ago they changed the membership criteria and began ensuring enlisted men and women.

2. I'd use your wife's and your information for comparison but believe you won't see any difference.

3. Don't know about replacement insurance for boats, but that's what I have for homeowners. I suspect they don't since they do not offer it on cars.

tcube

just use your wife's info. she will be the primary member, but her benefits extend to spouses, children, and grandchildren. there is no difference in cost or benefits once your eligible. the reason they are asking the info on you is that just recently they opened up membership to enlisted folks. when i joined ('94) it was limited to officers only.

awesome company, i would argue one of the best out there. i bank with them, handle all of my investments through them, and insure my house, cars, boat, and jewelry. i really don't think their rates can be beat. great website where i handle everything above. haven't written a check or visited a bank in 2 years, and i don't pay a dime for that service.

once you have insurance with them, they track your account and payments. if they have a good year (not too many claims), you get a check in the mail giving you 40, 50, sometimes 80 bucks back. other companies would pocket that as profit. being a member since '94, my subscriber savings account (sas) is approx $1000. if i decide to switch companies (which i won't), i get that money back.

great customer service. never had a bad phone experience (except waiting a few times for the mortgage line- as everyone else has in the past few years.) their claims department is awesome. i once thought i lost my college class ring. i called them, and they sent a check that day. no police report necessary, just my word. when i found my misplaced ring the next day, i called them to explain. they said no problem, just rip up the check when it arrives.

check them out. anyone who could be a member is crazy for not joining.

Link,

I am enlisted in the Army. I joined USAA about four or five years ago. I cannot say enough nice things about USAA. I pay everything through there web banking from my home. If I ever had any problems ie: a late posted payment they called the payee and explained. I have never had a problem with them. Go for it. Popup

Re: USAA Attn: mattttt25 and SoLittle

My whole family is covered by USAA, has been for 40 or 50 years. My mom lost a pontoon boat when hurricane Hugo destroyed the boathouse... USAA paid. Then about 4 years later she lost the replacement pontoon boat when a freak thunderstorm with very high winds and water knocked the boat off the cradle and destroyed it against the dock... USAA paid but then denied her insurance for a new bowrider even though it would be on a trailer, not in the boathouse. Had to buy insurance from Mercruiser, which was pretty reasonable for FULL coverage including the trailer and towing. We all still have USAA although I'm thinking of switching back to GEICO which I used until about 5 years ago when I switched to USAA for some forgotten reason.

Re: USAA Attn: mattttt25 and SoLittle

I have been with USAA since 1962. They just don't get any better. I afirm all that was said above by the others. They have all of my insurance - boat/home/cars/life/banking/etc. My three kids joined also.

We live in hurricane Andrew country. I had not hastle one after the hurricane. They imediately setup an emergency office. At my first trip there they gave me a check for $3,000.00 for living expenses and asked if that was enough to get started.

They have replacement coverage.

When I got my current boat (used 23' CC) they asked me what I paid for it. I told them (the truth). Their response was "We can't insure it for that. It is worth much more."

From time to time I have priced coverage with others. When they find out that I now have USAA they are quick to tell me that they will not attempt to meet or beat USAA.

As Matt mentioned the subscriber savings account is a real killer. I think my balence is well over $8,000.00 now and I have had checks for over $1,000.00. It takes a while to build up though. I have been with them for 42 years. I joined in college when I was in the ROTC program and stayed - thank God.

Your best bet is to call them at 1-800-531-8111.

solittle's post reminded me of something else. when i bought my boat (used), i financed it through usaa. on the same phone call, they transfered me to the insurance dept. when i gave them the specs, they proceeded to insure it for $3000 more than i paid. they didn't even care they held the note for much less.

again, great service.

Re: USAA Attn: mattttt25 and SoLittle

My family has used USAA for over 20 years. My father was in a motorcycle accident caused by another motorist. The motorcycle was declared a total and USAA paid and then went after the other drivers insurance. On the bike we had prepaid maintenance and an extended warrenty which were added on the loan amount. USAA completely disregarded the book value of the bike which was $2000-$3000 lower than the loan payoff amount and paid off the loan. They told us that we were not at fault and it shouldnt cost us money due to someone elses screw up. How's that for service! Couldnt ask for any better. Got a new bike and the dealer transferred the prepaid maintenance to the new bike. So we got free maintenance for 3 years.

Wow.. a little overwhelmed by all the replies. Thanks to all of you. (you guys are really USAA agents arn't you!) :)

Nice to hear from ya again popup!

Yes I will sit down with my wife and fill out the form using her info. (Sailor jargon drives me nuts) Sounds like a great company.

As of the end of this month I'm taking over all of the billing (mostly out going) from the paper boy up as it's not a matter of if, but when she is called active. So there won't be any surprizes. And this insurance thing is something I've been wanting to look into for a long.

When we check it out I'll post the info for you.
Thanks again for the input

V/R
Link
