Hey guys been doing a little research on possible parts to replace once the powerhead as been removed. I've been waiting on parts to finish my water deflectors and head gasket job. I rememberd back to one of my older threads concerning my water tube and pump goin back together. A member pointed to my attention the upper grommet could possible be froze. Removal of the head would allow access to the grommet. My question is how do I get to it? I can't find any diagrams and my seloc manual doesn't cover how to remove it once the head is off.

Re: Upper water tube grommet

I had my 28SPL ready to go together. DAMM. 5 times I tried. It went in the hole & stopped. Finally realized I had to have bent it while doing a impellor job. Put a tiny piece of rag into the tube end and made a DULL edged bevel. Kept the bevel chips out. Put some Vasaline on the tube beveled end. Pulled the tiny rag out. SMMOOTH. Right in.
I guess I had bent it during take apart, just enough.

Good luck.

Re: Upper water tube grommet

I'm sorry guys maybe my question isn't clear. How does the upper part of water tube and grommet insert into the powerhead? I don't see where it comes into the water jacket? The only diagram I have shows the upper grommet inside the exhaust housing but doesn't show it attaches to the powerhead?

The water tube goes into a grommet which is in the inner exhaust housing, not the powerhead. From the grommet upward, water flows through a cast-in passage up to the powerhead gasket, and into the powerhead.

If I follow you correctly and the diagram I have to remove the lower unit or remove the whole block to gain access to the grommet and Powerhead to lower unit gasket to replace those's?

Well sure, if that is what you are trying to accomplish. From your original post, I understood you already have the powerhead off. Maybe you meant to say you have the cylinder head off, not the powerhead.

Yes sir apologies I have the cylinder head off. That makes so much more sense. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

for my 35 evinrude, I couldnt find a single diagram of the upper grommet, under the powerhead. Once the powerhead was off It was easy to see everything and replace it.
