I am getting my manual tomorrow. I already know I will have to remove the engine. I have one bult that is stuck and won't remove with a 6 point socet. I am wondering if anyone knows how heavy the topend unit is on the 74 johnson 70 hp 3 cld. I don't think I am going to get anyhelp on the removal and I am not a big guy. I will be doing this with the engine itself remaining on the boat. Should I wait to undertake this tell I get help or is it something I can do as a one man job. I will not have to cary it far. I am just concerened with it being to heavy to lift.

Im not a huge guy , but Ive packed a 115 powerhead .

I wouldn't suggest removing it yourself, by hand as it needs to be lifted up straight.

To avoid damaging the crankshaft / driveshaft splines.

A cheap come- along , hung over a joist or tree limb will do nicely.

If you remove the electronics , starter , flywheel , heads and intake , its not heavy at all.

No I have nothing to use overhead has to come off by hand. I know this is going to sound strange but I live in a little 31/2' by 10' hallway. I have a little area to work in after buisness hours. I live in a grooming shop. I own property in California but am not going to drag the boat all that way with the van I own. I will be pulling the topend out in an allyway. I can get my girl friend to help.

If we are gental pulling this will we be fine?

Dropping the lower unit first will help. Then the only things to worry about is the stud on the bottom of the block....I think there is only one on the bottom rear of this block.....maybe 1 1/2" long.

It really shouldn't be much of a problem once you get the gasket broken loose. Just pick it straight up. I'd hazard a wild guess that it might weigh 40 pounds or so. Go for it.

I remove the powerhead on my 140 by myself and carried it 50 yards to my back deck. I'm 6'9 and 235 lbs.............. I wish!...............LOLo:)............ More like 5-10 and 165 lbs. I'm no giant either. You should be fine. Good luck. Just get her to open doors for you. It wouldn't look very good attached to your foot. Don't forget to lift with your legs and NOT your back. Of course this IS assuming your removing ONLY the powerhead and not the complete motor. Not sure what you mean by "topend unit". And don't forget to disconect the shift rod.

The bare powerhead weighs 72 - 75 lbs on a 49 cid 3 cylinder. Add the flywheel, ignition and fuel systems.

Listen to the advise above and remove the lower unit first. It'll go much easier. Besides, if you're rebuilding the powerhead you'll have to have the lower off anyway to replace the water pump assembly.

Re: Upper unit comming off soon.

According to UPS my 33 powerhead weigh's 68 pounds. I got it off (and back on) by myself and without dropping the lower unit. For me, it was harder getting my lower unit back on when I serviced the water pump than it was to put the powerhead on. My neighbor helped me get the driveshaft lined up and held it while I did the shift linkage.

Yours may be heavier than mine but if I had it to do all over again I'd do it the same way. We have different engines though so your mileage may vary.

Be real careful with the bolts holding the powerhead on. If any are siezed up you'll be in a mess if you break one.

Take your time with it and good luck.

Re: Upper unit comming off soon.

Ohh If they are seized up I will have them drilled by the pro's. I am very amiture and knowing this about myself I will leave the tricky stuff to thoses who know all about it. My engines doctor probaly will already have to drill one of the head bolts becouse it is frozen. If I cant get it off with heat then I will be cutting off the end of it and triing if that still fails I will have him drill it out.

I called my engines doctor and he said it wouldn't hurt to remove the lower half and do the water pump rebuild now. I am also taking the whole upper half off this includes the carbs, flywheel, everything.

Just need to pick up my book first so I make sure I do it right.

hey petty officer I loved the restoration pictures have you done any more work sence these would love to see the work. This looks like a tresure. I kinda wish mine started out like that becouse it adds to the finished product when you had to do all this work.

Thanks. I'll be flip flopping between engine, boat, and trailer. Most of my time (and money) has gone into the engine lately. Been having a tough time with it and ended up getting another powerhead. It's starting to come together now. Here's a video of it running yesterday.

Re: Upper unit comming off soon.

When I rebuild I like to strip the engine on the boat, and then remove the stripped engine. I take off the carbs, starter, coils, powerpack, T&T pack and harness and fuel pump. I take a lot of digital pictures to remind me what I am doing.

I reinstall the powerhead, and then redress it in place. Just easier for me, I know others do it differently.

I really like the idea of removing the lower unit first. It will make pulling the powerhead easier if you are lifting it by yourself. The 70 lb weight will feel heavier then you think even if you are standing on a sturdy platform to better lift the engine.
