I have attached a picture of the item. the upper shift shaft that is connected to arm by a lock nut which entails moves the shifter cable along the guide. I replaced this lock nut with a new one and now when I tighten the nut the shifter from the control is impossible to move from F to N to R.
I was wondering if a washer was needed somewhere between this? I have taken apart and lube it and lube the guide. it is only easy to shift if l leave the lock nut loose to where the intersection moves up and down.

First its the wrong type nut as it should be 1/2 the height and it does not fully tighten down, as it has to swivel in the bushing....

yep, need a low profile nylock nut.

Mercury sells it for about $2, but a decent hardware store should have one, possibly in brass.

@Faztbullet I only replace the nut that was there and it was loose. I read some where do not reuse old lock nuts. my manual does not show a diagram on this part neither does the web.

will i need a washer here also?
you are saying that the nut should be loose?
