Advice, recommendations, ideas...

How do I bust these loose without causing too much destruction?

Purpose: Restoration of engine; strip, clean, prep, paint Intermediate Housing and Motor Bracket as separate units...

DSCF2375.jpg

Been soaking for days and days with every penetrant known to man...LOL

Have applied heat...several times...tried knocking them loose, while hot, medium and cool, all the while spraying with penetrants...

Results, everything moves, but I need to remove the aluminum "chunks" to be able to separate the intermediate housing from the bracket, they seem to be "Rust Welded" to the bolt shanks...can't get any sockets or wrenches on the thru-bolts to try and turn them free...

Been whacking on the threaded portion of the bolts with a brass drift punch to minimize damage to the threads, to try and knock them back out...no success.

This is what the thru-bolts look like from under the steering arm...

I don't mind searching for new bolts or even new aluminum "chunks", but I could use a solution...

BTW, the lower mount thru-bolts move freely in the lower part of the steering arm and will slide out...but the "chunks" will come out with the bolts/intermediate housing...

If you need any more info, just holler...

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom...

Those aluminum chunks are the upper mounts.. take a drill and drill thru the thin part of mount next to steering swivel, then pry up and break bolt. Start with a small bit and go to largest... then the fun is driving remainder of bolt out of swivel shaft........

If you have access to a grinder hand held or die grinder you can slice it logways from front of the bolt to the rear. This will allow you to hit the mount and there will be the gap from the cut to allow it to give. After the cut you can try to squeeze the aluminum outter case and seperate it from the midsection housing. The rubber will allow you to squeeze it somewhat even if you can get it to give a little more penatrating oil can be spayed in the dry area. Or make two cuts on both sides and remove the top of the casing. You can then cut away he rubber exposing the metal sleeve that the bolt goes through. It is more than likely aluminum and can be chiseld or hacked off at that point.

Got lucky on the first one, a little friendly persuasion and I was able to knock the bolt out...gonna give the other one a fighting chance before drilling/grinding/breaking...

Thanks for the tips...:)

I'll post back with final results...

After several more attempts at heating and banging...I went with "Faztbullet's" suggestion and it worked like a charm...

Started out with a small bit and worked my way up to almost the diameter of the thru-bolt...

Questions follow the pics...

Questions...

Can this drilled mount still be used?

Which is better to replace the bolts, Stainless Steel or Grade 8 or ???

How much trouble am I in to track down some new mounts?

I will still need to cut the other bolt of the other upper mount in order to remove it...when replacing these, due to the steering arm not allowing removal or reinsertion of the same length bolts, is there any problem with reversing the way they are installed, in other words...the bolt heads through the mounts first then nuts on the steering arm side?

Finally, the lower exhaust extension housing has been slightly damaged from all of my beating and banging in several places where the gasket goes, can I repair these areas with JB Weld and block sand them smooth?
...OR...can I seal this area with hi-temp silicone?
...OR do I need to either have material welded onto them then sand flat?
...OR...Am I SOL and have to find another one???

Thanks for any help...

Re: Upper Motor Mount R&I, 115 HP I-6

I have found rubber type replacements, and they ain't exactly cheap...

Best I can tell, these are solid aluminum mounts...would it be OK to replace JUST the upper mounts with rubber type replacements, Or would I have to replace the solid aluminum lowers also?

Thanks for the link Maxz695...I have been searching Evilbay and yours was the first one I have seen...I'll keep searching, thanks...

If you want to replace with racing type solid mount ---->>>Ebay Mercury Inline Solid Mounts Mercury Racing Merc Race Replacement Motor Mounts | eBay Inquire for bolt hole size through the mounts to be sure they fit

Yes.... The factory mounts are rubber as the solids are aftermarket for racing purposes......the fun is replacing the 2 upper bolts:eek:

Thanks gents,
Measurements taken and I sent an inquiry to the Ebay vendor...

Cost wise, original factory rubber ones are over 200 bucks for all four...The solid aluminum ones on Ebay are $85 including shipping, for all four, 2 uppers and 2 lowers, If they are the right ones, I will be ordering the racing mounts...:)...
