upper drive shaft thrust bearing fail.

1975 70 hp johnson. large case. 70esl75e ser# J4295740.
Case was not full of gear lube. Had some in it but not full. Smoked upper thrust bearing near water pump. I've taken most of it apart going past the water pump. Have not removed drive shaft. I think I'll have to cause I'm not liking what I'm seeing. Washers melted/galled. When I put it together, how will I determine what shims I'll need. I imagine the pinion has to be just so with the prop gear.

Check the surface on the d/s where the thrust bearing rides. You will need a special shim gauge to shim the the d/s correctly. Most good BRP dlrs have them.

Special shim gauge. Bleh. Not what I wanted to here. Kind of like "I have a headache".
