I have my alpha 1 gen 2 torn apart to replace the seals and the manual is saying that I need to remove the bearing cup to replace the upper drive shaft oil seals. Maybe I’m just misunderstanding something but I don’t see why that is necessary as the cup doesn’t seem to be obstructing the seals from removal or installation. Does anyone know the reason before I yank it out?

The installation tool needs to occupy the space the bearing cup sits in for proper seal installation

I agree with you. I don't use the Merc installation tool, I use a couple of sockets the right size, and they fit just fine... No need to yank the cup.
