71' EVINRUDE 25hp, Can I replace the upper crankshaft seal w/o splitting the engine,, I have searched the threads and read about making sure it is leaking,
but not found the info on how its done. Also have asked in the past but have not gotten the answer. Thanks for all the help, site has been a very valuable tool for me. Cant afford a manual right now and the library is all checked out.
I replaced the coils and condensers/pts, retainer ring,so I am a pro at pulling the flywheel lol.......

To do it correctly requires use of a special tool to pull the old seal out without opening the case. Lacking the special tool, the next correct way is to part the case. The shade-tree way of doing it is to somehow dig it out. You may be successful, or you may break the case or damage the bearing. One thing for sure, once you start digging, you are committed.

I had that done on a '68 Evinrude 18. I brought it in to an Evinrude dealer. But, I pulled the flywheel and the magneto plate first. I explained that to the service manager and he only charged me one hour of labor. I don't recall if he had the special tool or not. From what I understand, the tool is a threaded, tapered pipe that screws into the lip of the seal and is then used to pull out the seal. Call around and see if any dealers in your area are willing to do it. One dealer insisted that the engine would have to be split at great cost.

I've also heard of people drilling three holes into the seal and then carefully driving in sheet metal screws. Then, the screw heads can be used to pry out the seal. If you try this, use a block of wood on top of the engine for leverage.

Good luck.

A slide hammer with a metal screw attached makes an excellent seal puller. If you do not have one you can usually rent one at a local parts store or make a simple one by taking a piece of 3/8 to 1/2" rod & weld a metal screw to one end then slide an old diesel or automotive piston pin over the rod & weld a plate on top.
