Upper bearing shaft removal

Have 1983 OMC 800 stringer. Replacing water pump shaft and upper drive shaft. Was able to pull gear and bearing assembly from drive shaft but have hit a snag with getting the drive shaft out. My manual says to support the gear casing on a soft surface and use a press to remove the shaft. Maybe I'm missing something here, but at the bottom of the casing there is a plate which seems to block the removal of the shaft. I think thats part of the water pump assembly. So, does that bottom part of the gear housing come apart somehow? I'm afraid that if I press the drive shaft down, it's going to bend the plate under it. Your question is a little hard to understand. Do you have the carrier out of the upper housing, or are you still trying to get the carrier out?<br /><br />

Bearing carrier is out of the upper housing. Gear and bearing assembly has been removed from the drive shaft. Trying to remove the drive shaft from the bearing carrier. There is a plate at the bottom of the carrier which blocks the removal of the shaft by just pressing it out as suggested by the manual. I figure there must be a way to remove the bottom part of the bearing carrier, but not sure. Don't want to damage the bearing carrier.<br />Thanks, Fred

<br />Do you mean the wp housing (#29) is still stuck in the bearing housing ? It does come out then you can press out the shaft, the seals will come out with the shaft.

It's just stuck. Whatever you do don't damage the bearing housing (#51). The wp housing is a service item and is avalible in a kit with the wp impeller.Try wraping the bearing housing with rags and lightly clamp it in a vice with the wp housing facing up. Then take a sharp chisel at a 45'angle and tap the wp housing up .Try to hit the wp housing on a thicker area then a thin area . Hope this helps.

Thanks. I figured that's what I was up against, but didn't want to start destroying stuff 'till I was sure. Will have a chance to get at it this weekend. Will let you know how I make out.<br />Fred

Thanks for the advise D*ck. The waterpump housing popped right out with very little trouble. Planned to try to remove the bearing from the shaft with my gear puller, but the reach is too short. Picked up a larger one, but won't have the opportunity to try it until next weekend. I hate the way work gets in the way of my projects. <br />Think I'll be alright using a gear puller to remove the bearing?<br />Thanks again for the feedback...all is appreciated.<br />Fred

Do you mean # 47 from #49 ? If so the best way is to press it off but you can try anyway you want just be careful not to damage it if your reusing it.<br />Good luck.<br />And if you are going to use the puller put a old worm gear type hose clamp around the jaws this will help the jaws stay clamped around the bearing.

As long as you all are on this subject, I've got one where the water pump shaft wont come out. My mechanic has cut away all parts of the pump but the shaft remains. <br /><br />I've soaked the entire housing in carb cleaner for two days now. Anyone know a trick for getting these shafts apart? I'd hate to replace these items if I don't need to.
