I'm looking to upgrade to a little larger boat soon. I live near the detroit river in Michigan so most of my trips would be to Puttin Bay and Cedar point. Have any of you taken this trip from southeast michigan? I'd like to know how long it takes and what size boats you have? I'm looking to buy a 24-28 foot boat and would like some input as to size of boat for that trip.

Hi,
From Belle River, Ontario but just down the road from you in reality.
Lake St Clair to Detroit River, round into Lake Erie and across to Sandusky and on to the roller coasters at Cedar Point. Done it a few times on friends boats. Depending on the weather you can get over in a 19 footer but in reality 24ft minimum in my opinion. Keep a very careful watch on the weather forecasts before setting off in either direction and have your marine radio on at all times. The crossing can be heaven that turns quickly into hell.
How long it takes depends on how fast you want to go. We have made it a 5 to 6 hour cruise on a Sea Ray 27 footer from here. Took us 12 hours back once when the weather turned and we were part way back with worse weather behind us. Travel with another boat if you can.
