I have a 1967 boat and Mercury O/B 65Hp with the pulley steering. I am trying to see if there is a direct bolt on single cable replacement system. I see the Teleflex & Uflex steering systems available, but trying to see if there are going to be issues with mounting and installation prior to purchasing. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is my first boat and trying to ask lots of questions before just diving in ;) :help:

Re: Updating Steering System

I believe the biggest issue is going to be putting a steering tube on your engine and connecting the steering cable. You may need to go to the Merc outboard repair group and get some expert opinions on what hardware you need to accomplish that. Everything else is relatively easy, just a matter of making the helm fit your dash, and routing the cable.

You can use a transom mounted steering cable clamp block to secure the steering cable.
Then attach the cable to the motor with a ball and socket connector.

Re: Updating Steering System

That Merc should have a steering tilt tube as they have been using them long before OMC did on thier smaller engines. So you will need to find a link arm. Suggest ebay, should be able to find many used there. Also the rotory helm will probably be easiest to mount. Would think that with all the parts on hand it should only take an afternoon to complete.
