Well, I went ahead and ordered the Redline Weber carburetor conversion kit for my '89 Winner Intrique. (3.0L Mercruiser)

It came in and was suppose to be a simple bolt on kit. It almost was.
The mounting holes on the carb were just a tad bit off. I talked to Redline Weber and they indicated that some of their carbs for this kit were not in spec in regards to this.(Jig problem) They readily offered to overnight another carburetor, or if I wanted to they would let me use a dremel tool and adjust the fit. (keeping the warranty intact) Since it was off by only a little, I opted to do the latter. The mounting holes needed to be shaved only a small amount on the outside circumference. I did the fix in about 5 minutes, making sure that the carburetor lined up with the intake so as not to impede performance. I did this by using the gasket as my reference.

Everything else was straight forward. (Fuel hose, fuel pump vent hose, ect...)
The throttle cable was re-routed to come from the rear to the front which was no problem and no bind at all. ( A bracket was used to do this. )

I finished the install on Friday of this week. I also changed the engine oil, filter, and spark plugs. I am going to order new plug wires, points, rotor, and distributor cap this week.

I took the boat out yesterday (with wife and kids) and finished tweaking the carburetor.

The boat was a little sluggish, so I loosened up the distributor and made a small adjustment to the timing. I did not have my timing light with me so i did this by "ear".

When I took off this time, what a difference! I have had this boat for 5-6 years now and it has never run this good! We spent 5 hours or so on Percy Priest Lake here in middle Tennessee. It was so nice to have the boat running good!

I will put the timing light on it before I take it out again to see if it is in spec.

I can post some pics of the new setup if anyone wishes.

Thank You to those who gave their advice and concerns.

The conversion kit lists for about $550 USD from Redline Weber. I found a new kit on Ebay for $399 USD from a Weber distributor.

Not being familiar with Merc 3.0's, was this a carb upgrade or a just side step carb replacement?

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=199124 Is his post about the kit. It better do a lot, a Merc remaned Mercarb for that engine is 350 bucks directly from Merc. For 200 more, I would hope it was a heck of an upgrade.

And replaceing the carb didn't correct the timing issue.

To give you an honest answer, I am not sure. Weber claims more torque off the bottom when doing the hole shot. I definitely feel that is true. I was getting to plane quicker. My boat has never been great at getting to plane. It was much better yesterday!

The hull design for this boat is notorious for slow planing as well as porpoising when trimming the outdrive up much at all. I am going to be adding some good trim tabs very soon to help this.

Top speed is about the same.

I guess that this would be considered an upgrade if it improves the performance of the boat. Time will tell as to whether problems will creep up or not. This is an aftermarket kit, so I was somewhat hesitant to invest my $ in it. At this point I have no regrets at all.

I understand that. I just added that to the post to relate my experience in getting my boat up to speed again. I adjusted the timing yesterday because the last time I was out in the boat with the old carburetor and it was running like crap, I adjusted the timing hoping that would help. It didn't and I never readjusted it again until yesterday. I couldn't because the boat wouldn't hardly idle. I didn't set it Friday at home because I ran out of time. (Prior commitment) Saturday, some friends wanted to take their boat out and wanted us to bring ours. I took the boat out and finshed the adjustments out on the water knowing I had someone to tow me back in if I messed things up. :D

I should have made myself more clear in the new thread post. :)

I totally agree!

That is why I initially inquired about this kit. I was hoping that I could have benefitted from the experience of those who may have tried this kit already.

Since I seem to be one of the first on this forum to give it a try, I thought I would share my experience, good or bad, and let others know how it is.

Anyway, as I stated, I picked up this kit for only $50 more then a remanufactured carb. I am pleased so far with my investment.

Thanks, Bond-o :)

I hope I can contribute to this forum in a way that will help others. I am not very knowledgable in marine fixes....yet. I know that hanging around here, I will learn a great deal and in return add to this board as I am able to.
