Did a waterpump replacement now having the following problem. In the pics youll see that while mounting the lower unti back up around the shift shaft is cracking. I made sure the lower unit was in foward also the remote controller was in foward. The lower unit only get so far (see the gap in the pic) before i here the cracking from the shift rod hole.
I verified that turning the flywheel turns the prop.
Is there just to much damage to keep the shift rod splines coupler from comin up through that hole? *added more pics on 2nd post*

Take the drive off.See if there is anything holding it out.If it came out then is should go right back in.
Take some more pics of the drive and anything you can think of.
Trying to figure it out without hands on is tough.
Fill out the profile. You might be close to someone who can help.J

Yes it should go in flush & it should go easily. I?m only new to this but it looks as if the shift linkage is too long for some reason & is preventing the lower unit from seating properly.
Some photos of the shift linkage when the lower unit is off may help work out the problem.
There are some knowledgeable people on this site. Not very often a problem goes unsolved.

Good Luck.

Re: UPDATED: Driveshaft housing and lower unit problem

I have the exact same issue on a 1996 Force 120 HP - The damage to my Drive Shaft Housing is a bit more severe than what is pictured - Have you had any luck tracking down a replacement drive shaft housing?

Anyone have any ideas where I can find a driveshaft housing for a 1996 120 HP Serial # OE173515

It apprears that the splines on the shift linkage did not match up just perfect - I too used a ratchet and tried a little too hard to have the lower unit butt completely flush to the housing -
