My son-in-law has the opportunity to get a deal on a boat.

The problem is it is powered by a 1999 200hp Ficht. I know they had a very bad rep. This one claims to have "All the Manufacturer updates".

Is it still something to be avoided?

If it's got all of the updates, which you can have verified by somebody, it's should be about the same risk as buying any other used outboard. The majority of the problems with the early Ficht's were in the smaller block V6, 150 and 175hp models. If it has low or normal hours on it for it's age and it's been taken care of, it should be a good motor, but used is used.

I wouldn't hesitate for a second if it's a 90 or 115. They seemed to be far less affected by the negatives than those V-6s.
