I purchased a used '98 evinrude 150hp ficht a couple of years ago and have had nothing but problems with this motor. As reading different posts by ficht owners, I read about "updates" performed on their motors, what does this mean and how do I know if this motor has been "updated"? Wished I had researched this purchase more closely...hindsight is 20/20.

Re: Update on omc ficht o/b

A redesigned fuel injector nozzle created by Sagem, a leader in the field, was added to give better atomization of the fuel in the cylinder - ultimately resulting in a cleaner burn.

New mapping strategies were created for the Engine Mapping Module (EMM). As a result, the transition from trolling speeds to half throttle has been made smoother, preventing shakes and shudders. A specially designed spark plug was added for cleaner fuel burning. The plug features a corrosion-resistant platinum tip and a body with a closer fit to the ceramic core.

A specially fitted deflector was added to prevent fuel from being sprayed directly on the spark plug, to prevent fouling and prolong spark plug life.

A new cylinder head was designed to promote better atomization, enhancing fuel distribution. The improved combustion chamber shape delivers a more powerful fuel burn and improves scavenging of the exhaust gas.

Back pressure compensation is provided by an exhaust sensor that provides feedback to the EMM. This constant monitoring of exhaust pressure gives the EMM the feedback it needs to optimize fuel delivery for the best performance in any operating condition.

A new oil formulation - FICHT RAM Injection oil -- was developed to reduce soot and carbon. This synthetic oil blend contains CARB X additives that suspend carbon molecules and pull them away from the combustion area, eliminating deposits in the cylinder.

An improved cooling system was developed, balancing the water flow between each bank of cylinders.

The oil distribution system was improved to properly lubricate the cylinders, pistons and rods. Through a new design of the engine block and pistons, oil is sent under pressure directly to the cylinders. The system lubricates the cylinder wall and piston rings, and a special port in the piston skirt ensures that oil is sent to the bearings on the crankshaft and connecting rods.

http://www.yachtworld.com/magazines/goboating/99dec/revved/

I don't know for how long this link will work so I pasted some of it here to.

/Bear

Your Bombardier dealer can run your serial number and tell what has been issued for that motor. As to what's actually on it, he will have to look at it to see.

I heard a very interesting thing last week. A dealer told me his Bombardier rep told him to instruct owners of the 97/98 Ficht engines to run high test fuel. We always knew the early ones had higher compression ratios but thats the first I heard of them needing more octane.

Ask your local dealer to see what he says.

Good luck!

The easiest way to see if your motor has been updated is to look at the spark plug recessed area on a cylinder head. If you see what looks like an allen screw next to a spark plug hole, you have the new "deflector" heads. The gray EPA label should say to use Champion XC12PEP plugs.
