I have read several postings regarding parts for older motors, and Joe and a few others suggested that I check here for any parts that you guys may still have around.

Edit: list of parts wanted deleted. JB

Also, a question for someone who might know...
The parts manual lists the standard spark plug as a Champion UL77V.
It says that AC-M40FF
Champion L2G
Champion L77J
are "special application" plugs for this motor.
Does anybody know what these "special application" plugs are for?
Thanks in advance.

By the way, for an update on my progress...
I have got all my tools in order, and plan on taking my boat out this saturday morning and beginning work on it. I finally have my OEM manuals, and am anxious to get started. If any of you have been wondering about my progress, I have this stupid thing called
"makin a livin"
that gets in my way, but this weekend, I will burn the ol' trouble light and keep you informed of my progress.
Thanks, James

Re: Update on Evinrude Probs, How to Clean?

Sorry, for the misunderstanding. After browsing the site, I found a few technicians that said that they may still "have parts in stock", and they should be contacted. I made the assumption that if they could state that they had parts in stock, then a "specific" request was acceptable. I guess not. I can understand why it is unacceptable to sell items on this sight; however, it appears to me that there may be a demand for a more convenient method to locate these many small suppliers. Have you ever thought of creating a means to fill this need?
Anyway... thanks for clearing the air, and since I value this sight tremendously, I will make sure that I do not let this happen in the future.
James

Re: Update on Evinrude Probs, How to Clean?

James... The UL77V is what is called a surface gap plug (has no electrode). Although the heat range is indicated to be "77", the surface gap plugs are a cold running plug and are prone to fouling easily, especially at an idle, on some engines.

The "Special Application" is simply a way of listing an alternative plug to (hopefully) avoid the fouling problem with plugs that do have an electrode. On the Battery Capacitance Discharge ignition that exists on some models from 1968 to 1972, the electrode gap would be set to .030. From 1973 (Magneto Capacitance Discharge), the gap would be increased to .040 . Curious as to what parts you needed, contact ReevesJ32@aol.com

Re: Update on Evinrude Probs, How to Clean?

Thanks again for everyone's advice/input. Joe... As soon as I have a parts list that is complete, I will email you. Sincere thanks.

Here's an update...
I removed the carbs and set them aside to rebuild later.

I pulled the flywheel, and the stator is toast. Literally... toast.

I removed the timer base, and will test the sensors according to the OEM manual later.

I pulled the intake manifold, and took it out into the sun. By holding it up into the sun, I see dailight around at least half of the reeds/leaves. Therefore, I guess I will need these also.

In my original posting, I mentioned that a compression check showed that I still had good compression (145,138,145,152); however, it seems that that is the only thing that I have that is worth anything.

I pulled the powerhead (hurt my @#%$ back) and removed the crankcase from the cylinder block. I was going to retorque the connecting rods, on the advise of G Daine.

To my dismay, the center crankcase bearing came apart in pieces, and the crankshaft is broken clear in half!!! The seal ring next to the center bearing broke into a hundred pieces, and the crankshaft is broken in half, the crack running through the seal ring retainer.

Looks like a heck of a mess. My questions are,

(1) since I am unfamilier with cost and availability of parts, does this sound like something that is cost effective to repair?... or should I junk it?

(2) It seems that, if I am to replace the crankshaft, crankshaft bearings, seal rings, connecting rod bearings, etc., should I cut to the chase and have the cylinders bored and replace pistons/rings?

Re: Update on Evinrude Probs, How to Clean?

Perhaps I am overlooking something but I have no idea what year and horsepower this engine is. If it's listed here, I can't find it. What is the model number?

Re: Update on Evinrude Probs, How to Clean?

Wish I knew how to change this topic title without posting a new topic...
I have now have the engine tore down.
What is the easiest way for a backyard shmoe like myself to clean all the carbon and other goop out of this mess, without buying a solvent tank?

James...just an opinion here. With a broke crank and with the year of the engine, you may condider looking around for a "short block". Or consider another engine with a later year. But I would definitly tally what the cost is going to be for rebuild and compare this to other options.
