Here is the original thread it you want the background info:

Becasue my motor tops out at 11 mph instead of 18-19 like it used to i havent been taking it out much. I decieded today to try and do the lynch and sync to see if that would fix the problem. The problem is that when i turn the throttle the engine raises rpm's much slower than the amount i'm turning the handle and is much slower overall. Before i did the link and sync i removed the startor and air silencer to check if the carb was opening fully. I was suprised to find that the air silencer was half full of rain water. I emptyed that out and the checked the carb which opened fully and looked brand new. I put the startor and silencer back on and started her up. Right away i noticed that the throttle response was much improved almost instant. It sounded way different (in a good way). Know my question is, is it possible that all that was happening was that as i accelerated the motor was sucking in that water causing it to bog down and lose speed. When i was at full throttle out on the water (when it was acting up) it was making these noises like it was reving very roughly but only at full throttle. Could the water get sucked into the carb and cause this? I hope thats all it was and will take it out on the water to test it tommorrow. Just wanted you'll professional opinion also could this have caused any damage.

very possible. did you check your plugs, before you found the water, and restarted it? if they looked clean, the water was getting there, steam cleaning the plugs.

I'm no expert, but way back when, I remember running water through the carb on my cars to clean them out, kind of a farmers thing I guess, can't see where it would hurt anything, and the way he described the slow throttle responce, and the rough running wth the throttle opened all the way, sounds to me like it was the water, the thing should run pretty good now, what a way to steam clean the plugs! ....I should of thought of that:D

With a car the water will stay in the top end. In a 2-stroke that water gets into all the bearing surfaces. Not good.

Let's hope it didn't go in with enough volume to wash out the insides.

thanks guys, for the response. I hope it works good tommorrow because that would be a very easy fix to a very annoying problem. As for the bearings, i don't think much water got in but you never know, should i run a little extra oil in the gas to help lubricate? It sounded pretty good running in the trash can.

If it were mine, I'd run 24:1 for the first tank of gas.

Re: Update on 8 hp with slow throttle response

thanks for the help guys, took the boat out today and i was back to running at 18 mph with no problem. I am happy that i checked the motor out before i brought it to a mechanic because i would have felt awfully stupid when he removed the air silencer and saw all the water. The weekend that i had the head gasket replaced it was storming all day, i guess the mechanic forgot to put the cover on before the rain and thats how the water got in. There is on spot in the rpm band where the motor runs a little rougher, what could cause this?Should i use some sea foam to see if it helps.
thanks
