Update my water seperator?

I have a old Rancor separator for my AQD40A. It has a plastic bowl held to the body by a thru bolt from the top. The little spigot has broken off & been plugged. The plastic bowl seems welded to the body & I'm afraid before it's over, that will break or crack also.
I really don't have the $$$ this time of year to "buy new", What I'm wondering is , can I replace the Rancor & just install a newer cartridge separator like I use on my outboards? The SS body with the spin on cartridge.I can get out for $40 if I go that way

Re: Update my water seperator?

I am assuming you aren't talking about the engine mounted fuel filter, but the RACOR (not Rancor) filter normally found in the engine compartment. Problem is, there are several types of Racor filters and are not an OEM item.
The engine mounted filter is also a water seperating fuel filter and should be changed yearly. It's also a good idea to have a prefilter like your Racor to prevent water from getting into the pump. A small amount of water will destroy those pumps and injector nozzles. And they are spendy.
Either fix that one, or get a new Racor prefilter, but have something. You also need to make sure it's a filter for diesel fuel, not gasoline.

Sorry, RACOR, & yes it's on the transom. I've already replaced the engine seperator with no problem.
Now to the question of replacing the whole RACOR unit with a newer type SS spin on cartridge type?

Like I said in the last sentence of my first reply. You need to make sure the filter is rated for DIESEL FUEL. A standard gasoline filter won't work.

Buying the right type I can handle. Knowing the capacity, I have no idea.
I have no way to know how much diesel the engine may use. The lines to the Racor are 3/8".
I was hoping someone with a newer boat might already be using one I guess.

Re: Update my water seperator?

The Racor 500FG is probably the most used filter for marine diesels in that size range. Almost every marine store carries the elements and seal kits and parts if needed. Plus, they have all the nifty add on's you could want. Alarms for water and/or clogging, gauges, drains, Different micron elements, you name it. They just work.
And they are so much cheaper than the $3,000 to $5,000 needed for pump and injector repairs/replacement when water and dirt get in.

Just google Racor 500FG

That is in my price range (barely). Just means the wife does't get a toaster oven under the tree.
I was hoping I could install a Siearra SS body & spin on a diesel cartridge for $50. and still be safe. Oh well, thanks Don
