How far up does my motor need to be in relation to the bottom of the boat? Im running a 57' evin 18hp on a 1542 jon boat with a 16" transom.

It needs to be as high as it can go without ventilating(cavitating)
Be sure it pumps water.Not likely to go as high as modern day through hub
motors but get it up there.Just add sticks at the top of the transom to steady it as you tighten the clamps.A manual jack plate will get it back farther in cleaner water
and be easier to fine tune the height."standard" prop is 9 1/4 X 11.If the bottom is smooth and not too full of rivots and keels you might approach 27 lightly loaded.
