Re: up or down on the plunger for forward gear?
Let's agree on this. On almost all OMC motors, pulling the shift rod up puts the motor into forward, and pushing it down puts it into reverse. Here's a bit of trivia however. Starting around 1989 (and continuing on) OMC changed the gearcase on the 40hp motor. On this newer gearcase, pulling the rod up put the motor into reverse, and pushing it down put it into forward. This is the only motor I've seen where this is true.
