I just boat a used boat with a mercruiser 420 and volvo penta outdrive. It's not been in the water yet...but with the boat on the trailer, outdrive in the up postion and the ignition on... the hydraulic motor hums...like it is continually working to keep the outdrive in the up position. I can't put the drive all the down because of the position of the trailer.

So is it normal to here this constant hum in the up position? Thanks

No it's not normal, It's also not normal to have a Merc 420 with a Volvo drive.
Who knows what you have there.
These are known by some as Junk Yard Dogs.
Volvo drives have been out since the 50's, which model do you have. Here is a chart that may help.

The side of the outdrive reads "CD trim".

I spoke with someone today who thinks that the solenoid may be stuck and he said to just tap on it a little....I am just not sure where that is.

I am also not sure where to check the level of oil in the hydraulic system. On the left side of the engine hull there is an electric motor with a filter adjacent. All the way on the other side of the engine hull is a long upright black cylinder that I think is the hydraulic reservoir. It is very hard to get to and I do not immediately see where to check to the level. there are two small bolt head screws holding the lid on that black cylinder.

If the oil is low in the system would that make the electric motor continuously run.
