unsure of engine model

I recently purchased a used Yamaha 30hp 2 stroke. Previous owner bought the motor with the boat and has no operating / workshop manual. He was told it is a 1999 model but there is no sticker on the transom clamp. Is there any other number stamped anywhere on the engine that could provide a clue to the model number?<br />The engine is a 3 cylinder 30 hp with electric start and "precision blend" oil injection.

Gonna need a little more help than that skipper. If it's a '99, it'll have the letter "U" in the model or serial nr.<br /><br />g'luck & c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Hmmm, now if'n it was in the states it should have an X on the end of the model number.

Thnaks Guys,<br />The only numbers I can see stamped anywhere seem to be part numbers prefixed 6J8....<br />I can't find an engine number stamped anywhere.<br />Any clues?

Look for a Silver Welsh Plug(Freeze Plug Looking)about the size of a Quarter and see if there are any other numbers on that. I doubt that it is as old as the Year that I found from the other number, so look around some more and see what you come up with.

Can't find a silver welsh plug. There is one on the back of the motor that has been painted over but I scratched the paint off to no avail. I looked up the number on the "marinshopen" website. It shows 1985 onwards...model number 30D. Are they still making them?

Not sure, but I thought they only made the 30 up until around 1992 or so.
