We periodically discuss the proper way to secure a boat on the trailer. Here's an example of what can happen when it's not done correctly. I apologize for the picture. It was from a Car & Driver magazine where they showed some "trailering Oops!". Not only did this accident cause damage to the truck, but it trashed a couple of out drives not to mention the damage to the boat. It appears this was a sudden stop as the truck apparently didn't hit anything.

Ouch! (Probably a young blonde in a little red car, putting on makeup while talking on a cell phone).

I wonder how you could move that back without causing more damage.

If you look closely at the picture, it appears to have cable or rope tied off the tow ring to what I would assume is another vehicle. But I agree, more outdrive damage is in the making with a simple jerk it backwards approach. But considering the current damage it may be a moot point.

Re: Unsecured Load

My dentist admitted to me that he did the "dump the boat at a traffic light" routine last fall. He was on the way to put the boat in storage and sort of dauddled at a traffic light. When the guy behind him blew his horn he took off and dumped the boat in the intersection. Fortunately it was a 15 foot aluminum fishing boat and the guys blew the horn turned out to be large construction dudes. They all grabbed a piece of boat and set it back on the trailer. No damage done except for pride. He had replaced the winch strap but didn't hook it up. In his haste to get going neglected to make sure everything was secure.

OK, I learned something here. Until today I was firmly in the "ain't no way a boat will leave those bunks unless I hit something solid" camp.

Not that I don't tie it down well for highway trips but I have been guilty of just letting it sit during short jaunts of a mile or two on city streets from ramp to yard. No more! :$

Re: Unsecured Load

Why does boating as our chosen sport, recreation or hobby have such a disproportionate amount of idiots associated with it? From the boat ramp to the ocean and even the highway, it never ceases to amaze me!

Paulie -- It just appears that boaters have a greater incidence of lunacy associated with it. We are not alone. Snowmobilers run into things. Ice fishermen in their haste fall through the ice. Skate boarders try to slide down hand rails, aerobatic pilots and crop dusters are in a league by themselves. Race car drivers, golfers, bicyclists (now theres some loonies), all have a few members that simply can't seem to get a grip on the order of things. It doesn't matter what activity, sport, hobby, lifestyle, or job a person has, he/she invariably is part of a group that has a subset of participants that can only be described as _________. Sorry, but I can't come up with a word for it other than those folks simply shouldn't be doing what they are doing. Ever watch American Idol? If you do, I'm sure you've seen contestants that really feel they can sing and are just blown away when they are told they are awful. So it is with every aspect of life. There are always a few that really shouldn't breed.
