What are the holes that I have labeled in this pic? I removed the screws from them and now they won't tighten back up. They take in water and leak oil. The screws don't seem to be stripped, but they just won't tighten back up. What do I do?<br />

Why are there screws there then? My understanding is that the lower unit is supposed to be water tight. Why would there be water drain holes in a water tight housing?

Those holes are exhaust holes. There should not be any screws in them. those holes do not access the sealed part of the lower unit that the oil is in. It is normal to see unburnt gas and oil coming out of them as well as water. Looks like a chrysler 55HP lower unit.

Are you absolutely sure that they shouldn't have screws in them? I don't want to get water in my gear case.

the two holes you have pointing with red lines saying these are the holes in question should not have screws in them. They should not even be threaded. They need to be open because they are exhaust holes

That doesn't make sense. The exhaust is that fin looking thing behind the prop.

That is true...but as the unburned fuel/gas mix cannot all escape through that exhaust location and since the unit housing is hollow with deep resesses those small holes are there to let water & fuel/gas mix that is trapped get out without staying inside the unit.

... a force-unique design feature, that's not a hole in your lower unit bored by sea creatures, but placed there by the US Marine engineers...

inquizito, agreed but, I think the holes were put there by Chrysler engineers or maybe even their predecessors. I got a '66 Chrysler 35(for parts) and it's got the same 2 holes.
