Universal Fuel Filter

I have a 1976 Suzuki DT40 outboard. Recently, when pumping the fuel bulb I have noticed some fuel escaping from the top of the fuel filter. On closer inspection I realised there was no o-ring installed in the cup. I tried making my own one and buying one from a local hardware shop but they didn't work. I think in reality it would be easier to replace the fuel filter and the cup feels almost stretched as you try and tighten it. If you go to far it pops and you have to start again.

My question is, is it OK to buy a universal fuel filter for outboards and replace the standard one, even though it wont mount in the same way. I have some some glass ones on ebay for a couple of pounds. Otherwise I will have to try and source a very old one and think it might be expensive?

Re: Universal Fuel Filter

Maybe mount a Walmart/Attwood($27)Fuel/Water Separator Filter on inside of transom....eliminate your old motor-mounted filter with a section of marine fuel hose.....That newer, bigger filter will work twice as well...

Re: Universal Fuel Filter

Thanks Robert Graham and Stylesabu. I think I will go for the smaller aftermath ones as they are only a couple of quid.
