Im using an elec fuel pump on my 85 xr 2 . The pump i have now the psi is 7-9 and is pushing gas past the needles. Im looking to by a 2-3.5 psi . The question is flow rate. Im looking at an autobest 42 s model with a flow rate of 42 gal per hour. Does flow rate matter as long as i get the psi right?

Tha small one will work fine. You might check on a adjustable by-pass regulator and keep tha one ya have...........

To better answer your question, yes flow rate does matter. The pump's flow rate has to exceed the WOT (wide open throttle) fuel consumption rate or risk the effects of lean mixture. I doubt that the xr 2 will consume 42 gallons of fuel/hr at WOT so that pump will be more than sufficient.

Ranger, You should wire that elec. fuel pump to some sort of sensor on the motor, so the pump shuts off when the motor is not running or has stalled. If the fuel line leaks, you will get a bilge full of gas, and that is a safety hazard.

Mercury didnt think it was much of a safety hazard with any of their high performance motors that just about all used in boat high pressure pumps and most of them used return lines into the tank.

Be aware of the hazards, use good fuel lines and you'll be fine. I prefer the P4389 carter marine spec fuel pump. It will last longer than your boat and they are priced under $120. Ive seen them as cheap at $77. Builds 5-6 lbs dead headed which is just fine for most carbs. I run one feeding a Bosch injection pump and have used them for years . Best general duty pump on the market up to 400 HP.

most importantly, the Autobest 42S is not J1171 compliant, therefore you can not use it on your boat.

SAE J1171 as stated by SAE International under scope states:

This recommended practice covers all electrical devices suitable for use in marine engine compartments and fuel tank spaces. To recommend a test procedure for certifying the External Ignition Protection of electrical devices used on boats.

Note: The word recommended. Also, to state that the pump is not compliant could mean one of two things 1: it failed the test or 2: it was never tested to the recommended test procedure for certifying. Nowhere is it stated that it cannot be used. I agree that safety should be of concern but stating that "therefore you can not use it on your boat." goes a bit overboard. (pun intended)
