Re: UNDERWATER METAL DETECTORS

Hey cindytim,

Where you at in Texas? I am a metal detector dealer - however the main line that I sell are not underwater detectors.

You'll want to look at the following brands: Fisher (like the CZ-20), or Tesoro (Sand Shark), or Minelabs, or possibly Garretts (Dunno how good their underwater detectors are, though)

I can put you in touch with several dealers, though, wo DO carry underwater detectors and can give you instruction on using them. I don't suggest buying from a mass-reseller - support your local dealer who can support you. You'll need to be able to tell the dealer what sort of conditions you plan on detecting in (fresh water or salt water) - as different detectors perform differently under varying conditions or salinity of water.

Rex S.

Try http://www.detectornet.com - they are in the Mid-Cities area of the D/FW Metroplex...

Robert is probably the one you'll speak with, and he carries several brands. They have an 800 # listed on their website ( 1-800-933-2897 ). If he cannot help you, then he probably can tell you who can.

G'Luck!
Rex S.

If no one can help you locally u can try kellycodetectors.com or liesurepro.com. On a side note I've known of people with cheap metal detectors that use a large clear plastic garbage bag and a vacuum and vacuum bag them. Good to about 50 feet so I'm told.
Happy hunting.

Beach and underwater metal detecting is what got me into boating in the first place. I agree with Purple Dragon, go to a local dealer unless you first do a lot of research in online forums and talking to local users. I own and use a Fisher CZ-20 and it works quite well once you get used to it. Metal detecting is somewhat of an art, the ads you see about identifying a target before you dig it are pretty mush BS. You'll also need a good underwater scoop and a belt and pouch for your "finds".

Add White's to the list of manufacturers to consider. And if you buy a cheap one you'll either give up the hobby or be back buying a better one. ;)

PS: I wouldn't recommend KellyCo.

Are you boating to an area that interests you.... seems like the further you get from people, the less you might find. I have a White's PI 1000 or something like that. Have not used it in a long time.

Re: UNDERWATER METAL DETECTORS

In my area there are several beaches that were public beaches with bars and gambling operations up until the early 60s (great metal detecting sites). The government closed them down by outlawing gambling and now the property is either private or county owned and closed to the public. The navigable waters and beach up to the high tide mark remains public property but there was no way to access it.

I bought a 12' "Porta-Bote" with engine and was able to launch in a accessible public location and motor to these sites, anchor the boat, and detect the shallow water and lower beach.

I soon found that I enjoyed the boating as much or more than the metal detecting and bought an 18' bowrider, then a 24'cruiser. Now my boat's too big to anchor near enough to these sites. I plan on getting an inexpensive inflatable kayak for next season so I can anchor in deeper water and kayak the 50 yards or so to the beach.

Gil, did you post on metal detecting boards a few years back?
