Mr. LadyFish just installed an underwater fishing light in our canal. We talked our neighbors into getting one too.

Last night it was like watching an aquarium. Tons of baitfish circling round and round. Three ducks parked themselves over the neighbors light and ate until they could eat no more. I couldn't believe how many fish we had in the lights. Its mesmerizing to watch.

Now can someone answer me this question? Why do the baitfish all swim counter clockwise?

Now can someone answer me this question? Why do the baitfish all swim counter clockwise?

Hmm........

The liars club version 1:
They are more sensitive to the natural rotation of the earth and respond to these conditions more agressively than larger fish.

The liars club version 2:
They swim counter clockwise on an outgoing tide and then switch to swimming clockwise on the incoming tide.

The liars club version 3:
They swim counter clockwise because bigger fish always swim clockwise and therefore the bigger fish can swallow the baitfish much easier.

I think liars club version #1 may be the most believable. I haven't checked their movement on incoming and outgoing tides yet but will. Its just the kind of thing that makes you go hmmmmmm.

Hmmm, Very interesting...Especially considering I would doubt if any of these baitfish has ever seen a clock. If it is true (that they do swim mostly counterclockwise)I would go with there earth rotation theory creating unseen eddies that they are following. But I would think it even more likley that the water flowing by the land features is creating these eddies, if this is true then they should reverse on the tides. But either way my monies on the eddies regardless of what is creating them.

The same reason the water in a toilet goes down in a circle. Rotation of the earth. Can any of the "downunder guys" tell which way the water goes round in the dunnies in Australia?
