Hi: Re: a 1985 Mercury 90 HP Inline 6, I'm trying to start this engine with just the chopped off wire harness, no controls. I have the manuel's wire diagram* but it doesn't explain what happens to the wires once they enter the ignition switch (which I don't have) Can you please finish and/or correct the following. It should be viewed from the cranking/start up point of view. Thanks.

*Ref: Selco Appendix pg A-40, & A-48

Yellow w/blk tracer, Choke, energized w/+12 v upon startup/cranking

Yellow w/red tracer, Starter solenoid, energized w/+12v upon cranking

Red, Starter solenoid/rectifier, energized w/+12v constantly

Gray, Rectifier, ???????

Black/yellow tracer, CDI, Grounded w/-12v constantly

Solid Black, Starter solenoid, Grounded w/-12v constantly

Solid Brown, ????, ??????

Solid Violet, ?????, ??????

Re: Understanding wire identification

Actually, the functions of the ign switch are described.
If you want to start that motor w/o a boat wiring harness it is real easy. Using jumper cables, connect the battery ground to a piece of the frame(w/o paint). Connect the + pole of the battery to the large red wire on the starter solenoid.

Hook up the fuel line, and prime her up by working the enrichener manually. Turn on the water to the flusher. Now set the throttle arm so the carbs just start to open and make sure the prop is removed. Use a jumper to momentarily connect the red solenoid post, where your jumper cable is to the small solenoid connection, where the yellow/red wire is. Now the motor will crank, and hopefully start.

You will need to choke the motor to stop it.

For the Commander 2000, per my OEM Merc manual for later model 90-125 hp engines (probably the same as your mentioned colors match the other wiring in the manual):

Switch pos------wire connections
--------------------------------------
OFF: Blk/Yel-Blk (connection thru switch measurable at switch wiring connector))

RUN: Red-Pur

START: Red-Pur-Yel/Red

PUSH-CHOKE: Red-Yel/Blk (I "think" you have to be in RUN or START for this connection to make...don't remember but will just take you a second to verify)

HTH,

Mark
