My year-2000 90HP Johnson outboard his these identification numbers:

J90VLSSE TNT

Can someone help me understand what these numbers mean?

I get the J90 part, but does anyone know what VLSSE and TNT stand for? Haven't been able to find it on online identification lists for year 2000.

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

"SS" = model tear 2000

TNT = trim & tilt

E = factory run and has no meaning

L = long shaft

Jim;

I think you forgot the E in INTRODUCES. Probably driving poor Tom crazy.

Re: Understanding serial number?

Thanks, guys.

Does anyone know what the "V" in VLSSE stands for?

I have a service manual that applies to J90 PLSS, PXSS, and SPLSS, and was wondering if there's an important difference.

Re: Understanding serial number?

Thanks, Gerry, that's a great resource...but I'm still confused about the "V" in VLSSE

V is not listed in the model year 1999-2001 reference .pdf as a design feature, but it is listed for 1990-1998. It stands for "special gearcase." ( J90VLSSE is listed at engine parts sites, like

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/B...Start, TNT, 20 IN. shaft, wht 2000/parts.html)

Maybe the reference.pdf has a glitch?

I was as confused as you..I had a 2001 50 hp johnson, with the V after the 50....it didnt seem to be listed much...and that explaination in the PDF above doesnt explain a V in the model number from years 2000 and on!!!!

Re: Understanding serial number?

Bob. you're right, but I solved the mystery by calling Evinrude/Johnson support at Bombardier. I got through really quickly, and the service rep explained that it does refer to "special gearcase," and that special gearcase means white paint.
