umm! I wonder what outdrive I have?

I was wondering what outdrive I have? Serial numbers are gone or I just cant find them. 1981 228 mercruiser. If was I to guess pre alpha, but i dont know much. Thanks for any help.

Pics help a lot.Your boat could have a newer drive even an older drive.
Who knows what's been done in 30 years.
Most boats 30 years old have had 3-4 owners and who knows how many mechanics have worked on it.J

The boat has been in my area for long time. The guy we got it from his father-in-law is a boat mechanic. He has worked the boat for most of the boats life, and continues work on it for me.Which makes me pretty lucky to have someone who knows the history. I just keep forgetting to ask him what outdrive I have. The more I learn from you fellers on this forum the more i do myself. If this helps the top of it has a lifting eye on it. Cant take a picture of it because i have docked in Lake Erie for the season. Also couldnt figure out how pull up the stickys on this forum. Thanks for wisdom

There is no such thing as a "Pre Alpha" think about it, how would Merc call something pre when they didn't even know what they were going to call it 5 years later.
You have what is called a MC-1 drive, (one drive for short)

Ayuh,...The MC-1 wore alota different badges,...

Yer original decals probably said 898....

It'll swap with an Alpha 1, outdrive for outdrive...
