UltraSonic cleaning?

I got the great idea of cleaning my Mustang SS wire wheel covers with a ultrasonic cleaning. They are not all that 'dirty' but do not sparkle.

I've seen what small ultrasonic cleaners do to jewelry and figured they would do the same for my wheel covers.

I googled 'ultrasonic cleaning, Portland OR' and all I came up with were window blind and carpet cleaners.

You'd think there would be industrial parts cleaners out there somewhere. Maybe I am just not looking the right way?

Those are fairly good size for an ultrasonic cleaner....... You could try a radiator repair shop that has cleaning tanks for rebuilding and radiators. The other option is boiling water and soap........ MTboatguy where are the old immersion heater's

when we need them :D These were fun to light and should bring back memories to prior military whose burns have finally healed and eyebrows grown back!!!!

I see that your picture does not include the stove pipe-rocketship conversion kit.

Re: UltraSonic cleaning?

We have a very large ultrasonic cleaner at my job (2 175 gallon tanks, one for wash and one for rinse). I personally would just try to wash them in the dishwasher. Ultrasonics are good but not the magic solution.

Yeah, I did that. It helped a little. Maybe I should try it again and spray it with a caustic cleaner first.

Try a package of lemon koolaid in the dishwasher. For .25 the citric acid works wonders on alot of stuff. If nothing else I guarantee the washer will be clean.

If you are looking for acid why not try a little vinegar or lemon juice. Seems it would be more effective than Koolaid.

Boomyal, looks like a 289 badge on the fender.I have one mothballed, that was nice motor. It was hotroded when I got it in 84,10.5 TRW,single plane, holly 600 etc.Big lopy cam, it was strong. With 1964 mustang toploader and a Hurst Ramrod shftr.in a 67 Cougar. It was very fun to drive and fast. The car was hit while parked on the street and insurance was weak because of existing damage, so i sold the body, but kept all the goodies!I hope to one day reserect it.Maybe a Falcon, Comet or Fairlane.

Yeah, it is a stock 289 2v. I am about to have a dual exhaust installed. I also have a period/model correct Autolite 4100 4bbl that I am itching to install. If I do that I will also install a mild cam.

I don't want to get too far afield of stock but I do not think those changes will hurt it.

On the Stainless Steel polish, there are simply areas of the caps that you could not get to, thru the spokes.

I do like the mild acid wash idea but I still say that Ultrasonic, with the right cleaner would do wonders for all the nooks and crannies. Just ask my gold jewelry.

From the photo it looked like id have to get on my hands and knees to see any grime!Do you show that car?For all the power mine had, it would get 20+ mpg on the highway if i kept my foot out of it!Not very often! While your cleaning the hubcaps how bout slapping some old school Cragger SSs on it!! they are easy to clean!

Re: UltraSonic cleaning?

The sonics would work well for the nooks and crannies as long as there is a clear line of sight to the areas. In addition to the "GIANT" units we have at work, there are some small tabletop units around the facility. You would have to do them 1/2 at a time since the whole wheel cover would not fit in the small machines. If you were local I would see if I could sneak them through for you. The problem is we use ours for parts cleaning to go into a cleanroom. If I put your wheel covers in there any parts that went in the sonics after would get contaminated. I'd have to wait until the water was about to be changed.

If you do find access to sonic cleaners a heated unit is where it's at.

You could try a pressure washer??

Citric acid has a ph of 2.2. Vinegar is 2.4. You will be amazed at what lemon koolaid can do to clean rust and the inside of your dishwasher.
