I'm interested in trying this type of fishing, have bought some basic ultra lite gear, and some 1/32 to 1/8 lures. What have been best to use for Blue gill and Crappie, or basically panfish. What works for you guys? Technique, time of day/nite, etc?

Been fishing like that for years. Catching a 3# carp on 2# test is a riot. Takes about 10 minutes to bring em in.

Have had a 4ft ultralight browning rod with a tiny diawa spinning reel foreverrrrrr....
I have landed a 7lb 3oz rainbow with 2lb maxima line.
I have always loved ultra light fishing. Can cast a single salmon egg 20ft.
Fun stuff.

For panfish, I like to use very small jigs. I cast 'em, let 'em sink, then swim them back very slowly with a little rod lift from time to time. You can also suspend them under a tiny bobber. The little waves will provide all the action that's needed.

There are a million of these jigs, some with a small plastic grub or worm, and some with hair or feather dressing. All work pretty well, depending on the day and what the little buggers are eating.

Small inline spinners are also fun, but really tend to twist that light line. I avoid 'em unless that's all they'll bite.

Probably the most important thing about ultralight fishing is the quality of the reel. Drags need to be ultra smooth, since you're gonna hook up with some decent sized bass one day or another. I've landed a 3 lb. largemouth on my 2 lb. test rig. Pretty exciting stuff.

You might want to start with 4 lb. test line, though, until you get used to playing fish on ultralight tackle. If you use something like one of the trilenes, you'll find that it casts very nicely. And, if you don't have a top of the line reel on that UL, it's a little more forgiving.

Plus, if you're an old man like me, you can actually see the line to tie a knot. :D

For just goofing around I take an Ultra lite with 2 spools, 2# and 4# line. And also a setup a little bigger with 6#. I have a separate tackle box with all the light lures and tackle ready to go. I can cast a mile with the light line, it's a lot of fun.

I have several ultra light reels on small rods i use for crappie. You can actually feel them when they bump the jig.
I like fishing at night with them too. I tie up under a small bridge, put my submersible light in the water and wait for the bait fish to come to the light.
Then the crappie and white bass move in.On the ultra light i use one very small split shot weight and drop a minnow down thru the light. The fish hit it on the fall very good.Caught 72 white bass and over 20 crappie in about 3to 4 hours. What a blast!!

I can't wait, it sounds like I'm gonna like it a lot. I will probably pack a magnifying glass so I can see to tie knots, getting my old age eyes to focus is a chore any more.

Forget the magnifying glass. Head to the drugstore and buy a pair of reading glasses. Get ones that let you focus at about 12" away. They'll revolutionize your knot tying. I keep mine on one of those straps and just drop 'em onto my chest when I'm not tying a knot. They're lifesavers for old farts.

I have actually landed some large bass with ultra light tackle, it takes a little longer and requires some strategy but it can be done. It is a lot of fun, in fact I fished most of the day today with my ultra light.

I notice that most UL rods are in 5" length, is it easier to to use a longer rod say like a Crappie 12' rod or is the 5' rod just best to use for the sensitivity feel for the lure and strike by the fish hitting it?

The long crappie rods are designed to let you dabble your bait in the water, not for casting. They're a lot like using a cane pole. Very specialized. The normal UL rods, from 4.5-5' are for casting, and they'll cast a country mile. Best of all, you can fit 'em in the car, all rigged.

I like the 8'6" Bass Pro Shops Micro lite rods. With the short rods you have almost NO control over the fish and you will get better casting distance and control with the longer rod as well.

Sometimes, that's right, however, just this morning, I landed a 30" northern pike on my 5'6" ultralight rod and 4 lb. test line. I had no problem controlling the fish, and scooped it up in my net after about a 10 minute fight.

Would it have been easier with the 8'6" rod? Sure, but it was no problem on the short outfit, either. The short rod is designed with a very fast tip, but some backbone in the butt area. With the drag set properly, it controlled that pike just fine.

It's a matter of preference, really. I like the shorter rods, since I can carry them in the back of my car and fish small waters wherever I find them.

Re: Ultra lite fishing, anybody doing it?

OK, thanks! I had some crappie poles but as you said I usually just had a minnow under a bobber just floating out there as far as I could set it out from boat. I actually didn't know whether you could cast with them since they don't have a reel seat. Was just wondering. I like the feel of the UL graphite rod I bought, and I bought a Zebco T11 under slung closed face reel for ultra lite use loaded with 4# line, and got some 1/16th and 1/32nd ounce lures to try. So far it cast great and I like the Zebco reel so far. It reminds me of the 202 but better.

I just bought a 6' ultra light rod and find that I like it a lot however it almost feels like I am not using an ultra light.

50# Redfish on 6# test. Is that ultra-lite? It took a really long time to revive the fish though. I hope she's made millions of baby's. MJ
