Hi, I have just bought an 18ft sport boat with a Mercury 2001 90 hp 4 stroke engine which has overheat problems.
The previous owner had the alarm sound and replaced the impellor ( he also put the bottom end back on with the splines out of position so the engine starts in gear, hey ho, will sort that out later. ) but replacing the impellor did not cure the problem.
I have ordered a service manual for the engine, its in the post, but I removed a plate on the starbord side of the engine which was held in with 3 bolts and had a spring and a black plastic device with 4 blades on it, I was obviously in the cooling part of the engine but I briefly started it with no water becoming present at this point.
I am now assuming that there is a blockage between the impellor and the powerhead but wondered if when I remove the lower part to realign the shft correctly I could possibly back flush the waterways?
I have also seen reports of salt-away ( not advertised in the uk ) is it as good as the video shows?
Also, boat is on mooring with no fresh water flush facility.
I would be grateful for any help, thanks.
