I was out skinig in my boat today with an 81 model Mecury 80 hp. we had been skiing for about 20 mins or so at an fairly slow rate..... guess 22 -25 mph... engine started to make an metalic hammering sound.....loud enough to be heard over engine...immediately shut down engine and looked at it......everything seemed in place.....restarted...had water out pisser.... and engine seemed close to normal.... but still noise....shut it down and towed back to trailer.....got home.....pulled all plugs...all 4 cylinder have 125 psi give or take 5 psi....feel this is normal......put muff on motor and restarted...noise isn't near as loud but still can faintly detect it......seems from high in power head or perhaps even under flywheel......will probably pull flywheel tommorow .....what could noise be....is it possible that wrist pin bad? wouldn't this make low compression?.....what about rod or main bearing.....if rod wouldn't it affect that cylinder....flywheel seems easy enough to turn......with plugs out.... seems bearing would affect this......don't want to teardown unnecessarily but don't want to ruin it either......where to from here...thanks guys

It could be several really horrible things, Crazyray. Or simply a loosened flywheel. Dunno which, but I wish you well.

Red sky at night. . . .
JB

If there's nothing under the flywheel that appears to be knocking on anything else, pick up a mechanic's stethoscope and have a listen. Also, I think that pulling one plug wire at a time while the motor is running might eliminate a rod knock from the possible problems.

This is not good. I would pull the plugs and get a flashlite. Rotate the flywheel by hand till one piston comes to the top. Keep rotating till that piston starts down, when it gets 1/4 of the way down stop rotating the flywheel. Take a screw driver and try to push the piston down farther, if it moves without the flywheel you've got either rod bearing or wrist pin problems. I would do each piston several times at different lenght's of travel in the cylinders. Either one your tearing her down. I don't think I would start that engine till this is resolves. If she lets loose even at idle she could punch a rod thru the crankcase and trash the engine.

well I pulled flywheel... found nothing much but may have been a little loose........checked all 4 cyls for piston movement while holding flywheel.... none there......used optical scope to check inside each cyl piston tops seem ok......re assy and fired it up no noise.......took it out and idled around seems ok..... think JB was right on must have been a loose flywheel......will keep ya'll informed..
