Ok, I replaced all seals on my water pump, gear gase, new impeller, etc. It is a 1989 Force L drive 125hp. With mufs and with the unit submerged in water, I get no water flow from the exhaust.

I have checked the key for the impeller and it is attached. My question is: does it act like a vacuum to suck the water up? Could I have a leak somewhere in the new housing? Also, I feel there should be a seal in the top of the water pump, but there was not one.....

Attached is what I am talking about. What could I be missing. Oh by the way there was nothing wrong prior to me taking it apart other than little water was getting into lower unit.....

Oh I installed the impeller and while looking down the shaft twisted it counter clockwise. No water comes out any weep holes.

Ok update. I am able to get flow when I put the water mufs with the hose on the other side......Originally before tearing the gear case apart the hose and muff worked fine on the right side of the gear gase, now it works only on the left. Get good water flow from the weep holes. HOwever, took it out on the lake and OVERHEAT!!! could something be put wrong together in the lower gear case not allowing water to get up to the impeller? ugh.

Ok, update, Hopefully someone reads and jumps in. I took apart the prop and bearing carrier (the part that holds the lube oil in) and creates the cavity for the water to enter the water pump. I don't see how putting the hose on one side would make a different from the other. My imipeller was trashed, second one. ugh....

Here is what I am doing now...I installed a hose right in front of the thermostat and feed it to the bilge pump exit. This will tell me if I have water getting to the thermostat. (thermostat works, cause I took it out and put it in boiling water and it opens).

I am now waiting on the impeller to see what is going on.

Did you fix the problem, I have the same issue with my I'm thinking it's not creating enough vacuum to pump the water to the engine with enough pressure, I?m looking right now to replace the water tube and top seal, do not know if this is going to fix it but I?ll posted here. :)

check out my other thread. I am working with Frank Acampora. I believe my problem is muffs. If i press them hard together and elinate water leakage from mufs, I get great flow through the engine. (thermostat removed so I know there is no blockage. Water will flow through the engine that way. Muffs...if only I had a lake nearby...

Interested in what you find out. Mine has good water coming out of exhaust but very little pressure at the thermosdat. Oddly it does not overheat. In fact it barely gets warm, so either my telltale is constrained somehow or that's just how it is. I did notice that there's a tendancy for the drive cable to rub on the large host on the right side of the engine. Mine doesn't have a hole yet, but it soon could. If you haven't already, check that hose for leaks.

Just wanted to jump on here for a bit. Yes the water pump housing should have a gasket that seals it to the lower unit. If not then water will leek out of the sides where bolts on to the lower unit. The water tube should also seal tightly or the water will escape out around to tube where it plugs into the water pump housing. Hope this helps.

Also water muffs were meant to clean lower units out of dirt and other thing that can clog openings over time. They can be used to run the engine though. Always better on the lake if you can.
