I think my 1986 Searay 3.0 cobra may need U-Joints and am wondering how is the best way to change them. Do I need to pull the whole outdrive unit off or is the an easyer way?

Thanks Rudy

Re: U Joints

Need to pull the outdrive off. Don't be scared, it's really pretty easy especially on a cobra. Put the shifter in Neutral, loosen the six nuts on the upper gearcase that hold the outdrive on the gimble, loosen the nut on the trim ram shaft, and just pull it off. Best to have 2 people cause it's a little heavy, or a hoist.

Check for any obvious wear, or rust. You just may need to grease them. U-joints don't wear out that easily when they're properly greased and there's no water present. The drive has to come off, though. Grease the gimbal bearing while your at it.J
