U-joint, Volvo 290 DP

Same lower unit at suspected bent shaft (290 DP), i noticed that my buddies lower unit seems to knock when up on the muffs and down it does not, I think that it is the u joint, or so i have been told, how hard is that to change once you have the top of the lower unit off. Is it like one for a driveshaft on an old truck or more complicated?

And yes, I have told him not to run the motor with the lower unit up like he has, He likes to start it and then run it down both in the water and on the muffs

The noise was probably the ujoints hitting the bellhousing and they may have punched holes in the bellows as well.
Pull the upper gear box and look before taking the boat out again. If there is a hole in the bellows there is water in the drive, and the engine bellhousing which puts kills the bearings. Then he has to pull the engine to change the bearings.
