All-

I was wondering what the bet oil to use in my i/o would be, it is a 3.0 Mercruiser.

I'm thinking of running mobile 1 in it, any thoughts?

There are a gazillion oil threads... Do a search and you'll be reading for days... The answer to your question will be there somewhere...

Wars have broken out and many deaths occurred over this 'simple question'.

My best advice to you is distance yourself, as quickly as you can... Change your screen-name, even your address. This 'simple question' is bigger than you could possibly imagine!!!

Awesome. I love to stir the pot...:D Apparently there are so many entries regarding engine oil, that when you do a search on it your get a database error..

But i do have popcorn at the ready, and now awaiting the fireworks.

Well.....

Let's make this easy.

click the following link.

http://www.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/mercruiserfaqs/fueloil.php#1124

If you don't want to use what Mercury suggests, use any oil you pull off the shelf at Walmart. There aren't any marine engine failures from using the "wrong" brand of oil........it's all been used successfully.

Cheers,

I'll even add the small print for those of us that forgot our "cheaters"!!

NOTE: The use of non-detergent oils, multi-viscosity oils (other than as specified), non-FC-W rated synthetic oils, low quality oils or oils that contain solid additives are specifically not recommended.

Let the games begin!

I don't believe the search function works for 3 letter words, unfortunately.

Re: Type of oil used

I use what Manual #17 for my engine tells me to use Marine Engine Oil so I use Mercruiser 20W-50. Yes it costs a little more to use to but I only change it once a year.

Striaght from the Manual:
"Crankcase Oil
To help obtain optimum engine performance and to
provide maximum protection, we strongly recommend
the use of Quicksilver 4-Cycle Marine Engine
Oil
. If not available, a good grade, straight weight, detergent
automotive oil of correct viscosity, with an API
classification of SH, CF/CF-2 may be used.
The following chart is a guide to crankcase oil selection.
Oil filter should always be changed with oil.
In those areas where recommended straight weight
oil is not available, a multi-viscosity 20W-40 (SH, CF/
CF-2) or, as a second but less preferable choice,
20W-50 (SH, CF/CF-2 ) may be used."

I vote for peanut oil. :D

And I vote for recycled McDonald's fry oil...I have been using it for decades, and I am spoiled by that great french fry aroma while cruising. I used to get the fry oil at a great discount...but my 'contact' got busted selling out the 'back door'.

I tried oil, engine oil, and a couple other related and it only returned errors.

Re: Type of oil used

Back to the question:

I use the manufacturer's recommended oil. Read your owner's manual and then decide for yourself. I never would have realized OIL can be such a topic of varied wisdom. To save you a lot of reading, the responses on iboats will mirror what you find in your average auto parts depot. Only with a lot more vigor and passion. GOOD LUCK :):):):)
