Is it OK to run SAE 80/90W extreme pressure (EP) Hyploid gear oil in V4 or V6 gearbox?

I'll let someone else vouch for that. However, HiVis which is the proper gearlube that I have seen in Wal*Mart and other various stores has the weight listed on the containers as 80/90W.

IMO, No! No additives in auto gear oil to deal with water intrusion.

Yes, Its "OK"! For many years long ago, there was no such thing as Marine gear lube.

Smart thing to do? Only if you change it regularly, at least twice a year and definatly at the end of the season.

It can also, especially in newer engines with small gear cases cause a foaming issue if ran hard because of a lack of enough anti foaming additives. You can avoid these issues by using a synthetic gear lube though, and they will deal with moisture fine. MObil1, Royal Purple, Amsoil etc.

Lubedude's bang on. I used Wally world gear oil last year and looked inside at the dip stick hole on my cobra drive to see thousands of little bubbles in the gear oil. Can't say whether this is good or bad but I'm opting for the synthetic gear oil this year.
