I received a Daiwa Accudepth 17LC reel for Christmas. What type of pole should I place this reel on. I'm partial to Ugly Sticks and was thinks of using a lite model. The rod and reel combo will be used for both walleyes and steelheads. Thanks Bill Mc

Re: Type of fishing pole

For walleye, I use the St. Croix 6'6" Medium-Lite, fast action. St. Croix makes excellent rods, and although cost significantly more than an Ugly Stick, are well worth the money. Plus with the Avid series of St. Croix, you get a lifetime warranty.

If money is an issue, I actually prefer the Berkley lightening rod over the Ugly Stick. At the lower end of the spectrum, I think it is mostly personal preference. You may want to give the Berkley a try, but if you prefer Ugly Sticks, that will work too.

What is your budget for this endeavor?

Most using line-counter reels find the match-up better to rods such as the larger ugly-stick or the Berkley lightning rod.. The St.Croix is a very light weight, super sensitive rod that isn't well-balanced with a line counter type reel.
It also depends "how" you intend to fish..

Sensitivity isn't an issue for most of the time I'm trolling with the rod in a rod holder. Max to spend around $60. Thanks for you replys Bill Mc

Straight -line and when I go for steelhead I'll either use a small dipsy or one of those red rockets I don't know what they are called. What I've done in the past for walleyes is a 2oz bottom bouncer with a 2-3 ft crawler harness. I have had good luck with this set up. Bill Mc

Excellent walleye rig.
If you are not using down riggers, I would go with the Berkley in a 7ft med-hvy. The lightning rod is a good one, and well within your price range.

Thanks I'll have a look at the Berkley. 7 foot was what I was thinking only med. Why med-hvy? Because of pulling the dipsys. I've never fished with them, so dipsy fishing is all new to me. Bill Mc

Bill, med action would be ok depending on the type of line you use. If using Braids, I like a softer rod, if mono or equiv., I like a little heavier rod with a fast tip.
Funny....I posted a reply to this a few days ago...just looked in and that post never made it..I must have missed add reply..???
Sorry 'bout that.

Plenty of good advice above for sure.

8' - 8'6" glass rod with medium light action has served me well with both species.. make sure that guides are plenty (11-12 on this length).

Guessing you're burning gas on the Great Lakes since you're in Michigan so, you'll likely hook-up with larger Kings and those damn 'oil-cans' up to the mid #20+ range.. due to the fact that you're trolling, the fish are setting the hook so toss out the idea of stiff rods all together. Having the ML action allows the back-bone to work on moving/playing the fish and the slower tip section provides you the benefit of added 'give' in the battle for when a 12-15lb Bow starts dancing top-side and then digs down and spurraticly rips line off in 10yd incraments.

just my 2 cents worth..

Thanks for your responses! I'm from St. Clair Shores a 1/4 mile from the Greatest non Great Lake - Lake St Clair. I fish most of the time on the north shore of Lake Erie's western basin. My inlaws have a cottage there. I bought a med action ugly stick 7' BWC to pair with the Diawa Accudepth 17LC. I'm sure this pair will handle the eyes. I've never caught a steely so will see. thanks again Bill Mc

Mac,

Buy a good rod. Loomis, St. croix, Quarrow, .

You not ever have the need to buy another and will feel ever tick on the end of your line.

Kid

Kanadakid, that "every tick on the end of your line" is why I recommend something softer for trolling especially when using braids.
The Ugly-stick and BassPro Tourney series are perfect for this type of trolling.
Highly sensitive rods with fast tips such as those mentioned end up causing hook pull-outs, (as discussed on another thread), and no "give" when close to the boat.
