ok....took a couple of sick days and went up to the lake for an over nighter and some walleyes. on my way there, there is a neat little intersection, where ya turn right, head down hill, and then a hard left on the next road. at the hard left, there is a boat half way off the trailer, and the only thing holding the back of it off the ground is a brand new johnson 20 four stroke. amazingly it did not bust the bottom end! helped these two fellas out, and got the boat back on. in the course of our efforts, i learned that the owner is a school teacher. before we parted ways, i explained the benefits of a couple of transom tie down straps.
ok!! we get to the lake , get the boat to the campsite shore, and set up. next camp to me, i watch this guy take a new poulan chainsaw out of the box, assemble, fuel and oil it.
he then proceeds to pull....and pull.....and pull.....and pull!
now.....i sell these where i work, so i went over to see what his trouble might be. ( sigh )gasoline in the bar oil side, and (yes, you guessed it)bar oil in the fuel tank! this one was on its way to the service center. later in the evening, as we sat around the fire chatting, i almost fell out of my chair when he told me he was a school teacher!!!

is there a pattern here??

Wow, Mred!

I doubt that it is a pattern.

There are some people who have over-self confidence and don't ask for instructions or advice about something new to them. They think that asking for help is admission of weakness.

There are others who ask for detailed advice from experts. They even read owners manuals !! They don't make many mistakes.

I haven't found that teachers are more likely to fall into the first group, though logic suggests that someone whose role in life is to know everything would be more likely to do what the teachers you encountered did.

Nothing like a dose of humility to wise one up. :)

When I was in high school one of the teachers'cars got towed into the auto shop. She said that it wouldn't run.Turns out she had went to check the antifreeze and pulled the wrong cap.She filled the crankcase with antifreeze  .Lucky for her she didn't crank it long.We changed the oil a few times then took it for a test drive, seeing no other ill effects she took her car.So the teacher thing might be right but this case was compounded by the fact that the teacher was female. :D

I am a teacher and the idea that teachers make more mistakes because we think we know everything is absurd. This is the first time on this board that I have read anything as stupid as this.

I work for the school board here in Tampa and am around teachers alot of the time. They are regular people too, but we still have a saying about them,"Those that cannot do, teach." Many of them have spent their lives in the clasroom as either students or teachers and don't much get out and "do". Not all, but some.

Being a teacher has nothing to do with any of the incidents. There are idiots (including "know it alls") in EVERY walk of life.

Want proof, look at Congress. IQ and common sense are not prerequisites.

I am in no way calling all teachers idiots, all I'm saying is that some teacher spend so much time studying in their particular field that they never gain the common sense we all take for granted.

In other words, they have lead a sheltered life, so to speak.

I know a lot of people that are teachers and about 80% of them does not know the first thing about a car but put key in and if it starts and goes in gear, fine. Never checks oil, water etc. and then can not understand what happened.
