Twins on a Starcraft?

Okay, ya'll know I'm a tinboat fan, what with my little Sea Nymph and all. That 14 footer is my skinny water boat, but someday I'll also add a larger boat for fishing farther out in the Gulf.

Was thinkin' a 19' Islander or maybe a Chieftain would be good. But I want the safety of twin outboards for going "offshore" in the briny water.

Anybody have such a Starcraft? Was a factory option ever available?

Inquiring minds wanna know! :D

Re: Twins on a Starcraft?

All the islanders and cheiftains I have seen (I own a 1986, 21ft cheiftain, 140hp mercruiser) have either single outboards or i/o units. I run mine in the pacific ocean all the time. I run a 140 i/o with a 25hp 2 stroke kicker motor. the 25 hp kicker will push it 7 mph in the ocean, I have a extra fuel pump to pump fuel from my main tanks into the kicker motor tank (6gal).
I run up to 20 miles off shore, the coast guard wil come tow you in for free most of the time if they are docked at your port.

I have heard that this is no longer true. They apparently call a service like Sea Tow for you ($$$$$)

I think it depends on where you live. Here in the Los Angeles area the coast gaurd is too busy with true emergencies to tow someone who ran out of gas.

BMR1953,

fwiw, there was an original/color Starcraft magazine ad for sale on ebay.com some time ago that pictured ( i think a mid-60s Jupiter) a Starcraft runabout with TWIN 40HP Johnsons.

also, a 40 horse "johnnyrude" was considered "BIG IRON" in those long ago days/daze. - "twin 40s" made you a "big man" on the lakes/bays/gulf in TX then.

yours, PG

Interesting. I wonder if a pair of 75's on a 19 footer would be just about right? Heh.

I don't know if it will float but a 18' starcraft ss will hold two 115 johnnys so your twins SHOULD fit on the transom if nothing else it will be all yours(with a little cool factor) good luck

Re: Twins on a Starcraft?

I have a 22 holiday and there is no way to mount older fat 4 Johnson motors side by side. Perhaps the newer ones will fit. I have a 9.9 Merc next to my 200 Johnson and it was very marginal to have any turning area. I could have altered the transom some but did not wish to do that as the boat is all origional, with no restoration on it. It is a 1975 holiday 22.

it is not at all going to happen(just guys and beer ) and some one says that would be cool. When i get it off the camera I will throw the pic on here yes it would be a lot of fun 200hp on a tinny. You got me wrong they will go on there with the factory transom but there is now way they will turn or function

Re: Twins on a Starcraft?

Where I am at the coast guard towed me in for free in 2007. It was a nice day and I was about 7 miles out when my camshaft gear broke a tooth. I was making 5 mph with the kicker but they came and got me anyway. I was going to just have them tow me across the bar and into dock because of the tide running out, but they decided to come all the way out and tow me the whole way in. Talking with the coast guard I got in impression you could refuse a tow from the tow company boat and the coast guard would come and get you. But the coast guard in my port is not real busy and most of the time has a boat available. I have a kicker that will get me close to port.
The other time my motor had trouble I requested they come across the bar with me just incase I had trouble. They did and did not charge. I was making 5 mph with my kicker and wanted some help available crossing the bar if I got in trouble. Spun a engine couple that time.
I now have a brand new engine and new coupler.

Re: Twins on a Starcraft?

Another problem with a Starcraft . It is so d--- far to reach back to the motors on these long boats. But I do love mine and the 200 on it is a go fast sucker. However they are rated at 150 hp Max. My Holiday came with the 200 on it and it has never created a problem. YET

BWR1953,

as for TWINS on an Islander 19, i would think that a pair of restored/counter-rotating Mark 78A or "direct reverse" Mark 700/800 Mercurys would be "the cat's pajamas".

fwiw, i HAD a Cartercraft 17 foot molded plywood runabout (in the mid-60s) that had a pair of 78A Mercs & it was FAST, as the hull "weighed nothing".

Again, that sounds good to me! I learned my lesson about repairing old fiberglass boats... tin is the only way to go!

I think this Starcraft would look great with twins on a bracket out back!

The new Islander has a platform on the back for the OB to mount to. There are other manufactures that make them also.
