I have finally, after a year, gotten my outdrives back after their rebuild. I have rebuilt transom assemblies to install in my newly rebuilt transom. Now I'm going through the engines before reinstalling everything. Compression was good on both engines. Already replaced risers and manifolds. After looking at these pictures can I get feedback? Should the water pump be replaced? Is this block rust a concern to any experts? I'm replacing the valve cover gasket, water pump gasket, thermostat, thermostat housing gaskets, pushrod cover gaskets and the oil pan gasket. Should I also do the timing cover gasket?

1. You appear to be in a shed, sling a rope around a truss and use a chain block and lift the engine.
2. Gaskets should be replaced any time they are disturbed.

4 ratchet straps to the roof trusses will support the motor

Geez, just don't pull the roof down on you...

Cherry pickers are cheap at Harbor Freight, and the fold up nice so they don't have a big foot print when not in use. I bought a half ton on sale for less than a hundred bucks. I've had a 400lb outboard on it with no issue. Never had the occasion to handle anything bigger, but I wouldn't hesitate if necessary. It's pretty solid....

It’s my garage. I can use a cherry picker. I like excuses to buy tools. How does the crank pulley come off? With a puller? I’m assuming it’s splined or keyed

The 292 aka 300 -6 inline is about 2-3 inches taller and your oem exaust is too short, you will need wet exaust hose

292s have a bolt that retains the harmonic balancer. After removing it just get a standard 3 point puller with some 3/8” 16 bolts.
As the Doc said the 292s are taller and the pan is also deeper, usually this causes no problem but worth checking.
Also as the Doc said the exhaust hose needs to be lengthened, since the riser outlet is larger than the lower end where the lower exhaust connects you will have to cut the hose in the middle and lengthen it with some stainless or suitable tubing.

deck height differences

230/250 = 9.150
292 = 10.875

use a damper puller

I bought an engine hoist, put it half way together and realized they gave me mis-matching boxes from different versions, took it apart, returned it, put the correct parts together and then realized the chains I had were not long enough. 2 Trips to home depot later the Oil pan is finally off. I cant find any pitting as asked by ahicks. I also pulled the harmonic balancer and took the timing cover off. Anything Else I should be looking at while im at this point? Also Many of the gaskets are showing out of stock right now at this site and other marine websites. When I'm dealing with gaskets that seal oil can I use automotive?
