I have a few more smaller tiller motors all of the sudeen and playing with them, most will not shut off when you turn the handle all the way to stop.

some of the small tillers i had in the past( pre 1970 ) would shut off if you got anywhere close to the stop line!!

now on some of the motors I have now 8 hp(89), a 15 hp(90) a 6 hp (69) and a 15 hp 4 stroke(96)....I think they all need to be choked to kill the motor...there is always the laynard button...but i think that is for safety and not to normally shut the motor off...but I may be wrong on that, so i am asking here

should the tiller control and tune up allow for the motor to die when turned back far enough on the handle???

thanks

Re: turning off tiller outboards

The later models you mention '89, '90 and '96 have the safety lanyard combined with the stop switch. Pull off the lanyard and the switch will close and stop the engine.

In the years immediately prior to the arrival of safety lanyards the stop switch was a simple push button. You pressed the button to kill the engine. In some case this button was located on the tiller end, where subsequently the modified switch and lanyard was fitted.

those with simple kill switches or safety lanyard operated switches would not normally be adjusted so that they died by closing the throttle completely. Rather they would have provision to set and adjust a minimum idle speed.

You don't have to remove lanyard/clip ....the button can still be pressed to stop motor with lanyard/clip still in place.

You can tell that mine does not have a lanyard :D. An '84 model. A few years before lanyards became normal fittings. (Would not be very usable on a sail boat anyway.)

Re: turning off tiller outboards

Thanks for the replies...

I knew i could kill the laynard models by pulling it( the laynard)...but didnt realize i could push it all in to kill it...makes sense..i figured there had to be a normal( read not choking it) way

now for the 1969 6 hp...

I think that dies when i turn the tiller all the way back ..is that normal??

there is no button on the motor or tiller than i know of... for turning the motor off..
