Turbo props last chance

I have a 20feet daycruiser with a Yamaha 200hp HPDI, I originally had a Ballistic 14x21 and I reached 48.5knots. I have tried two Turbo props and they were both out-performed in top speed, it was the TXP and the Lightning. I have one left to try this weekend and it's a Turbo 1 also 14x21. An interesting thing is that I had no jack plate with the ballistic and the engine was mounted rather low. I have had a CMC PL-65 jack plate with the Turbos. There was though an annoying ventilation problem with the ballistic.
I'm now selling my boat for a smaller fishing boat, I have advertised a top speed of 50knots so I have put all my faith in this Turbo prop ;-). Now I'm looking seriously at an 18.4feet alu boat with a 115hp engine.

Hi Matthias,
good luck with your final speed trials, but don't be surprised if the Ballistic remains faster than the Turbo 1. Apart from the ventilation issues, it can be a very fast prop.
So, just moderate your advertised speed-claim, sell the boat, sell the jack plate to JARB here (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=218232), and enjoy the fishing! :)

Mind sharing your annoying ventilation issue with the Ballistic?

And yes it is a very fast prop.

Had a Ballistic on my previous boat, a 20 foot daycruiser with an inboard 1,7L diesel and an Alpha-drive. Found that the Ballistic would ventilate very easily, in chop, in waves, in turns, whenever it could. The revs would come up for a second or three before the prop reconnected. I tried a succession of props after that (Turbo 1, Stiletto, Turbo 4-blade, Vengeance, Vensura, Revolution 4, even the Black Max alu-prop), and none of these were nearly as prone to ventilate as the Ballistic was. It remained one of my fastest props, though.

I ran a ballistic and turbo 1 on my boat. The ballistic was slightly faster than the turbo 1 but the turbo 1 had much better holeshot and midrange acceleration. I have only experienced ventilation problems with the ballistic at higher engine heights.

Yes the ballistic seems to be fast. Has anyone any experience with the four blade version? Thinking it may not suffer from ventilation as much, OTOH, with four blade perhaps top speed would be reduced. What's up with with XL versions, for higher power/weight ratios?
The turbos virtually never ventilates, I hope I can beat the ballistic with the T1 so I don't have to moderate my ads. Will keep you updated on this one!

Still have that 4 blader? I'm looking for a Torbo Offshore OS1 or a Stilleto III in a 17 pitch. Z

I bought the highest pitch they have in the 13+ Merc diameters and it was an XL. My previous purchase was the 21p and it was not an XL. The difference was much more blade area and slightly less cupping, and of course the additional pitch.

One thing I noticed about Ballistic is that the whole blade is cupped, or curved like a chute to funnel water through it as compared to most (a lot of) props (that I have seen) that have a flat surface across the prop radially. Course there are a lot of hot dog props out there I haven't seen.

I run on a light, fast, boat so I don't know the differences on a heavy loaded boat nor with a higher hp engine as you asked. Mine is only 90 hp.

My vent plate is about 1" above the pad on the boat but there is a V piece of alum (keel if you will) that covers the center weld and is right in front of the engine. I know this is part of the reason for me picking up 200 rpm's in tight WOT turns.

Thanks,

Mark

Regarding ballistics, I own a 14x19 that is modded by propellertrim.se, they have added a lot of extra cupping, this has actually eliminated the venting problem and it has great acceleration, though with some pretty high steering torque. Too bad the pitch is too low, the engine will over-rev at 44-45knots. Would be an idea of modding a 14x21 the same way.
